Major Scale Half Step Rules

1. These are for descending lines

2. Rules are the same for 1 3 5 and 7 or 2 4 and 6

3. Starting on 1 3 5 or 7 one half step between 6 and 5 or three half steps between
3 and 2, 2 and 1 and 6 and 5

4. Rules for starting on 2 4 6 are no half steps or 2 half steps between 2 and 1 and
6 and 5

Dominant 7th Scale Half Step Rules

1. These are for descending lines

2. Rules are the same for 1 3 5 and b7 or 2 4 and 6

3. Starting on 1 3 5 or 7 one half step between 1 and b7 or three half steps between
3 and 2, 2 and 1 and 1 and b7

4. Rules for starting on 2 4 6 are no half steps or 2 half steps between 2 and 1 and
1 and b7

Practice:

1. Start on each degree and apply the first rule. Play the scale descending with this
rule twice. Then start on the same degree and apply the second rule and now
now play the scale descending twice.
