Sub Grade Modulus

Approach A: Ref “Foundation Analysis and Design”, 5th Edition, by J.E.Bowles, Pp-505,
Table 9-1
Foundation is resting in dense sand, hence subgrade modulus, Ks = 6.40 – 12.80 kg/cucm
So an average value of 9.60 kg/cucm can be used.

Approach B: Ref “Foundation Analysis and Design”, 5th Edition, by J.E.Bowles, Pp-505, eq.
9-6a
Sub grade modulus, Ks = Es /[B(1-2)
Use weighted average E = (105 x 0.44 + 500 x 2.0 + 585 x 2.20 + 2000 x 1.30 + 4000 x 18)/
(0.44+ 2.0 + 2.20 + 1.30 + 18.0) = 3213, say 3000 kg/sqcm
Assuming foundation size of 12m dia raft, equivalent size of square footing = 10.64m x
10.64m
Hence Ks = 3000 /[1064 (1-0.252)] = 3.01 kg/cucm

Approach C: As per “Foundation Analysis and Design”, 5th Edition, by J.E.Bowles, eqn. 9-9
Subgrade modulus, K = 40 x SF x qa in KN/m3
Where SF = Factor of safety = 2.50
qa = 30t/sqm = 300KPa
Hence K = 40 x 2.5 x 300 = 30000 KN/m3 = 3.0 kg/cucm

Approach D: As per “Geotechnical Engineering Handbook” by Braja M. Das” Ref. Clause

4.3.1., p – 4-22 to 4-24
Subgrade modulus, Ks = 3.04 kg/cucm for corrected N = 28 & 12m dia raft.
