EE 503X HW1

Issued on Jan. 25, 2020.

Due on Feb. 11, 2020.

(1) Consider two buck converters with ideal components (i.e., ideal switches, diode,
inductor and capacitor). Given that both converters operate with the same
parameters as follows:
Vg=3.6V, Vo=2.0V, C=10µF, fsw=1MHz.
(1a) Calculate the inductor value such that the first converter will always operate in
CCM, and the load current Io ranges from 100mA to 500mA, with BCM at
Io=100mA.
(1b) Repeat the above calculation for the second converter which always operate in
DCM, and the load current Io ranges from 100mA to 500mA, with BCM at
Io=500mA.
(1c) For the converter in (1a), calculate the peak inductor current for the nominal
load current of 250mA. Calculate also the output voltage ripple at Io=250mA.
(1d) For the converter in (1b), calculate the peak inductor current for the nominal
load current of 250mA. Calculate also the output voltage ripple at Io=250mA.

(2) You are asked to design a buck-boost converter using ideal switch and diode
with the following specifications:
Vg=30V, Vo=-20V, R=4Ω, and fsw=40kHz.
EE 503X HW1

(2a) Find the duty ratio D and the average inductor current IL.
(2b) Calculate the value of L that will make the peak-to-peak inductor current
ripple ΔIL equal to 10% of the average inductor current IL.
(2c) Choose the filtering capacitor C such that the peak-to-peak output voltage
ripple ΔVo is 0.1V.
(2d) Sketch the source current Ig(t) and diode current Id(t).

(3) Derive the efficiencies of a boost converter with parasitics resistance when
operating in CCM, similar to the derivation of a buck converter in the lecture notes.
Plot M vs D as D changes from 0 to 1, with Rs=Rd=RL=50mΩ, and R=10Ω.
