Homework assignment 5
Solution task 1

Choose basic size D = d = 35 mm. From Table 7-9, a locational interference fit is designated as
H7/p6. From Table A-11, the tolerance grades are ∆D = 0.025 mm and ∆d = 0.016 mm. From
Table A-12, the fundamental deviation is δF = 0.026 mm (δhole = 0).

Check the hole parameters:

Eq. (7-36): Dmax = D + ∆D = (35 + 0.025)mm = 35.025 mm

Dmin = D = 35.000 mm

The bearing bore specifications are within the hole specifications for a locational interference fit.
Now find the necessary shaft sizes.

Shaft:

Eq. (7-38): dmin = d + δF = (35 + 0.026)mm = 35.026 mm

dmax = d + δF + ∆d = (35 + 0.026 + 0.016 )mm= 35.042 mm

Solution task 2

1a) Deep groove ball bearings can take side loads. Good alternatives are double-row bearings or
tapered roller bearings.

Straight roller bearings are not able to take thrust loads.

1b) FD = 5.34 kN

a = 0.3

L10 =LR = 106 rev

Load rating from table 11-2: C10 = 19.5 kN for deep groove bearing

From  LD = LR (C10 / FD)a

LD = 106 rev * (19.5 kN / 5.34 kN)3 = 48.7 *106 rev

= LD / n = 48.7 *106 rev / 400 min-1= 2039 h

Solution task 3

=
2. (a) Fa 3=
kN, Fr 7= =
kN, nD 500 rev/min, V 1.2

From Table 11-2, with a 65 mm bore, C0 = 34.0 kN.

Fa / C0 = 3 / 34 = 0.088

From Table 11-1, 0.28 ≤ e ≤ 3.0.

Fa 3
= = 0.357
VFr (1.2 )( 7 )
Since this is greater than e, interpolating Table 11-1 with Fa / C0 = 0.088, we obtain

X2 = 0.56 and Y2 = 1.53.

Eq. (11-12): Fe = X iVFr + Yi Fa = ( 0.56 )(1.2 )( 7 ) + (1.53)( 3)= 9.29 kN Ans.

Fe > Fr so use Fe.

2b) FD * LD1/a = FR * LR1/a

FD = Fe

LR = L10 = 106 rev

LD = (FR/FD)3 * LR = (55.9 kN/ 9.29 kN)3*106 = 217.8 * 106 rev
