CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND RELATED LITERATURE

Introduction

Bullying is the most common problem in the school, some of the students

encountered discrimination, physical harming, harsh words, intimidating that may

lead to trauma or depression and later on it will go to suicide. Bullying can occur

during or after school hours and mostly in social media or should have called

cyber bullying.

In Texas, a senior high school student named brandy vela, made

international headlines after she shot herself in front of her family after enduring

months of aggressive cyber bullying. In June 2017 a cheer leader committed

suicide after being bullied on social media and at school. (Ordway, 2017)

In Manila, a college student allegedly committed suicide over failing

grades and bullying from his classmates in San Juan City on Friday. Patrick

Mole, 24, a third year college student at the University of the East (UE) in Manila,

was found dead at around 10:30 a.m. by his sister at their house in Barangay

Balong Bato, according to a report from the Eastern Police District (Emmanuel,

2014).

In Davao, about suicide is not new and not unusual these days. In fact, just last

May 20, 2018, three suicide incidents were recorded in Davao Region alone.

Suicide is the worst effect of depression. And worse than worst is that suicide is
preventable only if depression is properly addressed and treated but oftentimes

severely depressive people are left alone by themselves (John, 2011).

Review of Related Literature

There is a strong association between bullying and suicide-related

behaviors, but this relationship is often mediated by other factors, including

depression violent behavior, and substance abuse (cooper, 2015). Bullying of all

types usually forms a pattern of hurtful behavior (Kowalski, Limber, & Agatson,

2008) and has been shown to increase rates of both suicide ideation and suicide

attempts (Hinduja & Patchin, 2010). Moreover, students who bully other are

bullied, or witness bullying are more likely to report high level of suicide-related

behavior than students who report no involvement in bullying (Espelage, 2014).

Empirical studies and some high-profile anecdotal cases have

demonstrated a link between suicidal ideation and experiences with bullying

victimization or offending. The current study examines the extent to which a non-

traditional form of peer aggression. Cyber bullying is also related to suicidal

ideation among adolescents. Youth who experienced traditional bulying or cyber

bullying, as either an offender or a victim, had more suicidal thoughts and were

more likely to attempt suicide than those who had not experienced such forms of

peer aggression (Hinduja & Patchin, 2010).
