ABSTRACT
Walnut (Juglans spp.) is the most important temperate nut fruit of India. It is mainly grown
in states like Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Walnut is one of the
most valuable exchange earning nut crop. There are no regular orchards of walnut in India
because the existing planting are generally of seedling origin. Vegetative propagation is most
preferred over the sexual method of propagation to get true to type seedling and to avoid long
juvenile period. Commercially tongue grafting and cleft grafting are followed but maximum
success rate is achieved through patch budding and chip budding (Hodaj et al., 2014). The major
constraint is limited availability of scion material from desired tree results in very few
vegetatively propagated plants. In recent days three flap grafting, small graft technology, hot
callusing and micro propagation techniques are emerging as potential methods for rapid
propagation of walnut seedlings. Different budding methods (patch, shield and chip) were
studied using different varieties of Persian walnut (Juglans rejia L.), patch budding showed the
highest callus formation, bud union and scion growth followed by shield and chip budding under
greenhouse condition than the field condition (Ebrahimi et al., 2006). It is reported that high
graft success obtained during late dormancy in hot trench method (Zyl, 2009). It is reported that
the maximum grafting success was obtained in wedge grafting followed by tongue and veneer
grafting in three different weeks of February under green house and field conditions (Mir and
Kumar, 2011).Results showed that the optimum culture medium for the callus induction from
these explants was a DKW basal medium consisting of 1 mg/L BA, 2 mg/L KT (Cai et al.,
2013). By adopting the different types of budding and grafting techniques we can produce large
quantity of quality seedlings for encouraging regular orchards in India.
The walnut (Juglans regia L.) belongs to the family Juglandaceae has wide adaptability
to grow in temperate regions of the world between 1200 -2150m above sea level. Grafting in
walnuts is more difficult than in other fruit trees. Temperature and humidity have major effects
on the process of walnut graft union. Specially changing in temperature among the uniting
period has direct effect on callus development and successful grafting. Best temperature for
walnut grafting is 27°C. Therefore, this study is developing the new grafting technique and to
generalizing the new propagating method in early, because walnut tree is greatly difficult to
make a success of grafting and budding. At present grafting and budding are the most popular
methods like three flap grafting, small graft technology, tongue grafting and cleft grafting and
hot callusing in the production of walnut trees. In walnut, budding is basically carried out by
the method of chip budding, patch budding.
