Think about an item of convenience that also represents waste or consumerism, then write an
essay in favor of banning the item or in praise of the convenience of the item. Be sure to take
a stand – this is a persuasive piece that you should imagine appearing as an article in a
newspaper or magazine.

Keepin It Trashy

Single use plastic is plastic that will be used one time for one purpose, obviously. But

when using single use plastic items like water bottles and straws people rarely think about where

it is going when they are done. There are alternatives to the silly single use water bottles such as

reusable water bottles but some may argue for the convenience of the single use bottle that you

can just grab on the go.

A company by the name of “Just” encourages the use of all natural and reusable

materials. The caps are made from sugar cane, and the bottles themselves are made from paper,

plants and a small amount of aluminum. If there was a ban on the use of one time plastic the

impact could be big. Without the alternative of plastic people would be forced to use the reusable

items and retire the land filling materials.

It takes 450 years for a single water bottle to decompose. 50 billion, yes billion, water

bottles are used annually, that would mean sitting around for 2.25e+ 13 for those water bottles to

finally be taken care of, a number so big it would not fit on this page.

Something unknown by many people is that you actually can recycle water bottles but

few choose to actually follow the instructions. When thrown into the trash water bottles will go

and sit in a landfill for ages taking up tons of space and causing a chemical to be produced which

is then absorbed into the human water supply. This has the potential to cause diseases among

water.

If a city were to ban the use of plastic they could potentially start a movement to another

location. And if the ban were to be successful then that would start a chain reaction of other

cities and states joining the no plastic movement.

This year hundreds of thousands of kids and teens have joined the movement to bring

awareness of global warming and talk about the detrimental impact it can have on the world.

Something commonly talked about amongst those groups is single use plastic. I know personally

I have learned a lot from teens about global warming and my awareness of the subject has been

majorly changed. Everything movement starts with the word of the people and if the people want

change they will get change. If everyone was aware of the issues presented with plastic then

there could be a difference in the world. It is crazy to see what a large impact a single person can

make, so make that change, be that person who stops the use of single use plastic.
