Differences between present and
Revised General Education
Curriculum
The revised GEC is leaner and more in keeping
with the liberal nature of general education.

- strips away remedial and introductory course.

The revised GEC provides an element of choice


through nine ( 9) units of elective courses.
- electives can accommodate a higher
education’s philosophy and address new
developments that students must know.
Revised Core Courses
24 units of course courses
9 units of elective courses; and
3 units of Life and Works of Rizal
36 units

The general education courses maybe taught in


English or Filipino
Eight core courses

2. Readings in Philippine History/Mga

3. The Contemporary World/Ang

5. Purposive Communication/Malayuning

6. Art Appreciation/Pagpapahalaga sa
Sining
7. Science, Technology and
Society/Agham, Teknolohiya at Lipunan
8. Ethics/Etika
General Education Electives
(9 units)
The elective courses must:
1. Conform to the philosophy and goals
of general education;
2. Apply an inter or cross-disciplinary
perspective; and
3. Draw materials, cases or examples
from Philippine realities and
experience, and not just from those
of other countries.
Electives must cover at least two domains of
knowledge ( arts and humanities; social sciences and
philosophy; and science, technology and
mathematics).

On April 15, 2016, CHED
issued a clarification on the
status of P.E. and other
mandated/legislated
courses in the new G.E.C.
1. Physical Education ( R.A. no. 5708) and the
National Service Training Program ( R.A. no.
9163) are required for all students enrolled in
the undergraduate programs.

2. Philippine Constitution
- can be integrated in “ readings in
Philippine History”
3. Agrarian/land reform
- can be included in “ Readings in Philippine
History”, in the context of discussing agrarian
reform issues.

4. Population Education and Family Planning


- can be covered in the “ Contemporary
World”

5. Taxation
- can be included in “ Ethics” or “ Readings in
Philippine History”
6. Climate Change and Environmental
Awareness per RA no. 9729 and 95121
- can be covered in “ Science, Technology
and Society.”
Some notes on the new GEC:
1. CMO 20, s. 2013 was issued on June 28, 2013.
2. On April 21, 2015, the Supreme Court en banc
issued a Temporary Restraining Order ( TRO)
enjoining CHED from implementing and
enforcing the provision of CMO no. 20., s.
2013, insofar as it excluded from the
curriculum for college Filipino and Panitikan as
core courses.
The eight ( 8) course courses ( 24
units),along with the mandated
course on Rizal’s Life and Works
based on Republic Act 1425 will
be taught starting AY 2018-2019.
While the TRO is in effect and
while awaiting the Supreme
Court’s resolution of the case:
The inclusion of nine (9) units of
GE electives starting AY 2018-
2019 as prescribed in CMO no.
20, s. 2013, is deferred in order
to provide flexibility in the GE
curriculum, until further notice
from the Commission.
 HEIsmust include Filipino and Panitikan as
core courses in the General Education
curriculum.

Policy on the Admission of


Senior High school Graduates
to the Higher Education
Institutions Effective Academic
Year 2018-2019
1. All Grade 12 graduates beginning Academic
Year 2017-2018 are eligible to enter college
regardless of the track or strand taken in the
Senior High School.
2. No grade 12 student or graduate shall be
denied acceptance in applying for college
entrance examinations in the higher education
institutions.
3. Current Grade 12 students who were
previously disallowed to take the entrance
examinations shall be given a chance by the
HEIs to take the entrance examinations.
