ISKCON* Welcome to the Krsna-Balarama Temple! We hope you have an inspiring visit to Sri Braja-dhama, the sacred land where Lord Sri Krsna manifested His pastimes 5,000 years ago. The Krsna-Balarama Temple was established in 1975 by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, Founder-Acarya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). It stands at the gateway to the town of Vendavana, which was established in the early 16% century by Sri Rapa Gosvam! and Sri Sanatana Gosvami under the direction of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Vrndavana is now home to more than 5,000 temples of Sri Krsna. The worshipable Deities of the Krsna-Balarama Temple are Sri Sri i Sri Sri Krsna-Balarama, and Sri Sri Radha-Syamasundara accompanied by Srr$r1 Lalita-Visakha. The temple campus also comprises the vamadbi of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, with an adja@@Bpgallery museum of photographs and displays; Srila Prabhupada’s House, the personal quarters and bhajana-kutira of His Divine Grace; a rama; a 43 room Krena Balarama International Guesthouse; the Bhaktivedanta Swami Gurukula, an international school from grades K tol; and, a short walk away, the Bhaktivedanta Swami Gosala. Gaura- brabmacari dally invited to take part in our temple kirtans, dratia and classes. Please read on for the schedule of temple programs and festivals. Srila Prabhupada has said that anyone who comes to Vendavana will “at once contact an atmosphere of spiritual life and automatically chant the names of Radha and Krsna.” Vrndavana is a transcendental abode. We feel greatly fortunate to be here, and we hope to be able to serve you. In 1966) ‘on’ the orders of his spiritual master, Orn Visnupada\ Srilx Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Prabhupada, Srila Prabhupada left India for New York to teach the message of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and the chanting of the Hare Krsna maha-manira. In the next few years, Hare Krsna became a houschold word as the Hare Krsna movement spread rapidly in the U.S.A. and the Western world. In 1971, Stila Prabhupada returned to Vrndavana on a tour with fifty-one of his Western disciples. This amazed and delighted all the residents of Vrndavana, most of whom had never seen a Westerner before, what to speak of a Vaisnava from another country and culture. It was Srila Prabhupada’s desire to establish an international Krsna temple in Vrndavana. At that time, he was offered land by Sri Kashi Prasad Saraf and his wife, Srimati Gita Devi Even though the property was in the Raman Reti area, quite some distance from town, Srila Prabhupada accepted the donation and began construction of the Krsna-Balarama Temple. The grand opening of the temple was on the auspicious occasion of Rama Navami, 20th April, 1975. It was attended by dignitaries, the entire town of Vrndavana, and devotees from all over the world. The inauguration of the Krsna-Balarama Temple was a triumphant proclamation that the message of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is beyond caste and creed: All living entities are eternal servants of the Supreme Personality of Godhead Sri Krsna. The temple has three ornately carved and gold-leafed teakwood altars. From left, the first is the altar of Sr Sri Gaura-Nitai: Deities of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu (Gaura), who is non-different from Krsna Himself, and Srt Nityananda Prabhu (Nitai), who is Balarama. The middle altar is of Srt Sri Krsna and Balarama. Srila Prabhupada explained that because Vrndavana had no prominent temple of Krsna and Balarama, he was hnilding ‘one to make it known that the worship of Gaura-Nitai is the same as that of Krsna and Balarama. The third altar is of Sri Sri Radha-Syamasundara, accompanied by Srt Lalita and Sri Visakha. Srila Prabhupada explained that alldhomah it % oxteamnelly diiftarih to eater tte the pain: of Radha-Krsna, it is possible by the merey of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. However, 500 yearsago, this wasall but forgotten. Vrndavana was a jungle. F.S. Growse writes, “...exceptin the neighbourhood of the one great thoroughfare, there was only here and there a scattered hamlet in the midst of unclaimed woodland.” To make His. eae abode known to the world, Sa Krsna eee in Jiva gosvamins... cannot be overestimated. They created modern Vrindavan, and made it into a centre of Gaudiya Vaishnavism.” One of the most remarkable features of this period in Braja history is its extraordinary literary activity. The works of Ripa Gosvami, in particular, display uncommon beauty and unique brilliance in theological thought. In Bhakti-rasamrta-vindhu, he reworks the language of aesthetics to express the underlying grammar of the soul’s devotion to God. It is estimated that the writings of Rapa’s nephew, Jiva Gosvamt, alone comprise 400,000 Sanskrit verses. An unparalleled philosopher, Jiva Gosvami systematized and comprehensively supported the teachings of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, most significantly in his six-volume Bhagavata-sandarbha. The Six Gosvamis' writings to establish the doctrinal foundations of Gaudtya Vaisnavism are even more impressive than the work of the evangelists who wrote the Gospels to establish Christianity. A spiritual renaissance was underway, and the town Po Le Tae) Pee fe cee city of Yama, but achie . the goal of all punya.” ere Jatipura, Govardbana sunrive from Vrndavana to America. In the next twelve years, as he preached around the world and translated Bhagavad-gita and other books of Vedic literature, which his dis iples distributed by the millions, he fulfilled the prediction of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu that every town and village on earth would utter Krsna’s name. In 1971, in accordance with the teachings of Lord Caitanya that caste is no bar to devotion, Srila Prabhupada revolutionized the practice of bhakti by bringing Western acolytes to Vrndavana. In 1975, he opened the now hugely popular Krsna-Balarama Temple. Today, Vrndavana is a bustling, cosmopolitan centre of pilgrimage that caters to millions of visitors every year, thousands of them Krsna devotees from abroad. The temples are packed for dratis and throngs crowd the bazaars. The present revitalization of Vrndavana is directly related to Srila Prabhupada’s tireless activities as unofficial ambassador of Krsna consciousness to the West. Residents, proud that he introduced their Krsna to the world, fondly remember him as the ‘hero of Vrndavana.’ Vrndavana is the place of the eternal “The most auspi 1s of all auspicious places of a's pastimes is the great garden kK; Urndla pure devotees like Srila Prabhupada who reveal this.
