THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

NARRATOR: Once upon a time, there was a hunchback named Quasimodo who lived among
the beautiful and elegant people of Paris. During the 1482 Festival of Fools, he was elected the
Pope of Fools for being the ugliest person in the city. He suffered humiliation and physical
abuse from other people but he endured it all.

One day he was put into trial for knocking out Pierre Gringoire the night before. He was
stretched and pulled apart and was insulted by the crowd.

QUASIMODO: Please give me water! I am thirsty!

NARRATOR: No one cared until the beautiful gypsy street dancer La Esmeralda came.

LA ESMERALDA: Here, take it. Even though you and Claude Frollo attacked me last night, I
still pity you.

NARRATOR: Quasimodo fell in love with La Esmeralda at that moment.

At the time when La Esmeralda faced execution after being accused of murdering Phoebus,
Quasimodo arrived just in time to save her. He came swinging down on a rope from Notre
Dame and carried La Esmeralda back to the cathedral where she is safe.

LA ESMERALDA: I can’t stand the sight of you. But I am grateful to you for saving my life.

QUASIMODO: Just as when you saved my life from thirst. If only you’d tell me that we can be
friends, then I will be fine. Friends?

LA ESMERALDA: Uh. F-f-friends.

NARRATOR: Quasimodo and La Esmeralda remained friends. However, due to unfortunate

turn of events brought about by Frollo’s greed, La Esmeralda hanged herself as Quasimodo
watched in terror and despair. He then killed Frollo by throwing him down the cathedral.
Quasimodo was never seen again. Years later, a grave digger discovered the skeleton of a
hunchback curled around the remains of La Esmeralda.
