Tutorial-5

Gradually Varied Flow

1. Derive dynamic equation of GVF.
2. Draw all possible typical flow profiles for GVF.
3. Sketch the possible GVF profiles in the following serial arrangement of channels. The
flow is from left to right:
I. Steep – Horizontal – Mild slope
II. Horizontal – Steep slope
III. Mild – Steep slope
IV. Steep – Mild – Sluice gate – Mild slope
4. A 1.8m wide rectangular channel carries a discharge of 1.8 m3/s at a slope of 0.004.
At certain section the depth of flow is 1.0m, n= 0.013. Name the profile.
5. A 2.0 m wide rectangular channel has normal depth of 1.25m when the discharge is
8.75 m3/s. The slope of the channel is classified as ____________.
(Steep / Mild / Critical or Horizontal)
6. A rectangular channel 8m wide carries discharge of 11 m3/s (Manning’s n= 0.025,
bed slope= 0.0016). Compute the length of back water profile created by a dam
which backs up a depth 2m immediately behind the dam by direct step method.
Take at least 3 steps to compute the profile.
