Simple Present Tense

A. General pattern

B. Nominal sentence(adjective/adverb/nouns)
(+) S + is/am/are + adjective/adverb/nouns
(-) S+ is/am/are not + adjective/adverb/nouns
(?) Is/Am/Are S + adjective/adverb/nouns
Example :
 Adjective : (+) He is clever student
(-) He is not clever student
(?) Is he clever student?

 Noun: (+) it is an english boook


(-) it is not an english book
(?) is it an english book?
 Adverb : (+) We are in the office
(-) We are not in the hospital
(?) Are we in the hospital?

B. Function
1. Expressing habitual actions or customs
2. Expressing general truth

C. Examples
1. The desert is hot and dry.
2. Camels live in the desert.
3. Date tree grows well in the desert
4. We aren’t Arabian but Indonesian.
5. They don’t go to Mecca every year
6. Are you hungry?
7. Does Shinta walk to school every day?

D. Special Note
If the subject is third singular person (e.g) he, she, it John, Smith, Karen, the earth), we must
add a final –s Or –es to the verb.
1. Add –es if the verb ends in ss, sh, ch, o , x or z
cross – crosses
crush - crushes
catch - catches
mix - mixes
buzz - buzzes
2. If the verb ends in –y preceded by a consonant , change the –y into I and add -es
cry - cries
fry - fries
3. If the verb ends in –y preceded by a vowel sound , just adding end the verb with –s
