Homework Assignment #9

Select an appropriately designed K-series open web steel joist for the joist identified as J1 in the
figure below. In addition, select an appropriately designed KCS-series open web steel joist for the
joist identified as J2. Joists designated as J2 support two air handlers that weigh 4.0 kips each. The
air handlers are attached to the joists at their four corners such that the weight of each air handler is
transferred to the joists as point loads at the corner of the air handler. The architect has requested
that the depth of both J1 and J2 must be equal. Specify bridging.

Roof Snow & Live Load = 35 psf

Roof Dead Load:

5 Ply Roofing plus Gravel 6 psf
3” Tectum Plank 4 psf
Estimate Joist weight 5 psf
Miscellaneous 5 psf
