Lesson Idea

Title: Understanding Positive and Negative Integers

Grade Level: 7th Grade
Content: Mathematics

Standard Addressed: MGSE7.NS.1 Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and
subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers.
Amount of Time: 45 Minutes

Technology Standard Addressed: 3- Knowledge Constructor

SMAR Level: Augmentation
Essential Question(s): What did I learn about adding and subtracting rational numbers that I
did not previously know? How will this help me in the future?

Learning Activity

• Introduction: I will begin the lesson by reviewing integers with my students and how to get
negatives, positives, and zeroes. I will show them my concept map for integers.
• Instruction/Activities: The students will be instructed to create their own concept maps
using Popplet. The concept maps will be centered around integers, but the students will be
given the opportunity to be creative with how they want to create them.
• Final Product: The final product will be a concept map about positive, negative, and zero
integers. They will be able to print out their maps and put them in the cover of the math
binder. This way, they are easily able to access their maps.
• Evaluation or deliverable: The students will upload their concept maps to the classroom
website with a paragraph on how the map has and will help them manipulate integers.
Reflective Practice

A tool that I would like to use if time permits, is BrainPop. There is an informational video on
BrainPop centered around adding and subtracting integers that would be great to show the
class and would incorporate another aspect of instructional software. To extend it to a higher
Bloom’s level of creativity, I would also be able to ask the students to use their devices and
BrainPop to make their own video about subtracting and adding integers. They would also be
able to upload this video to the classroom website for other students to see.
