Pastern
The pastern of a horse is made up of two bones that extend downwards from the fetlock.
Knee
The knee of the horse is made of several small bones.
Forearm
Any bones below the forearm on a horse are essentially equivalent to the bones of the
hands and feet on humans.
Lips
When your horse begins flapping his lips can provide clues to why he’s doing it.
Muzzle
Muzzle is the area of the horse’s head that includes the mouth and nostrils
Nostril
A horse’s nostrils are very flexible.
Eye
Horses tend to keep “half an eye on everything”, rather than focusing on specific targets.
Forehead
Forelock is the hair between the horse’s ears that falls onto the forehead.

The poll is a name of the part of an animal’s head, alternatively referencing a point
immediately behind or right between the ears.
Crest
The crest of the horse is the topline of the neck.
Shoulder
A well-sloped shoulder can indicate a horse that will have smooth gaits.
Withers
Withers is the area on the horse’s back just after the neck but above the shoulders
Back
The back is the area that extends between the withers and the loins of a horse.
Loin
The loins are the area just behind where the saddle sits, above the flanks of the horse.
Croup
The croup is the area from the highest point of the hindquarters to top of the tail.
Dock
The area at the top of the tail is called the dock of the horse.
Tail
The tail of the horse is an extension of the spine.
Gaskin
The gaskin of a horse is the muscular area between the stifle and the hock.
Hock
The strength of the hocks is very important as this is the most active joint in the horse’s
hind legs.
Stifle
Underlying the stifle area is the stifle joint formed between the large hip bone (femur) which
is equivalent to thigh bone and the tibia.
