 Designed by architects Sou fujimoto

 Located in Kodaira, Tokyo, Japan

 Project Area is 31,034.29 sq.ft

 This building is completed in 2010 after construction period of 3 years

 Two storeyed building


Design concept

 Fujimoto’s idea is simple and consistent


 Based on a spiral of wooden bookshelves
 The client wanted a linear and fluid circulation within the building
 The spiral wooden bookshelves appear to be more appropriate for a
fluid and linear circulation
 All the walls of the library inside and outside consist of huge
bookshelves made of wood
 A subsidiary entrance is used in the complete main entrance

 The outlines highlights the repetition of bookshelves throughout the


library’s structure and its façade

 Bookshelves also serve as wall and integrated into building’s structure

 The division of the window panes align with the width of the
bookshelves both above and below

 The size of the window is repeated


 Reading areas are connected to each other by small bridges

 The wide staircase can also be used as auditorium

 The library doesn’t overpower the surrounding structures

 This helps to keep the space united

 One defined ceilings helps to unify the two storeyed building into
one continuous space
Lighting

 Several skylights , large windows and openings throughout the building


help to illuminate library with both daylight and sunlight during the
daytime

 Natural light from above enters the library through Polycarbonate


panels, creating cozy reading areas

 Decrease the need for electric lighting during the daytime


Materials

 Materials used for library is in total harmony with surroundings

 Built of timber reinforced by steel frame cloaked in full-height of glass


walls

 The blond timber is used for the internal to diffuse light

 The darker timber is used in external to fire protect the skin
