This public holiday is Guatemala's National Day and is always

celebrated on 15 September.
Independence Day in Guatemala commemorates the independence
of the Central American provinces from Spanish rule in 1821.
On September 15th, Guatemala and the other Central American
countries – Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and
Nicaragua – celebrate their independence as an independent
country from Spain. The year was 1821 when, after two previous
attempts, independence was declared from the Kingdom of Spain.

Guatemalan runners from across the country ready themselves

for the passing of the torch, known as the “Antorcha de la
Independencia.”

Children who have practiced their instruments for months clamber

along streets in complete marching order playing in bands. It is a
festivity worthy of fireworks, the best food, and lively entertainment
for both the old and young!
