Animation institute at Mumbai
Following the latest decision by Maharashtra government, Mumbai is all set to have India’s first ever training institute for visual effects, animation, gaming and comics. The institute is expected to have a total of 16 UG and PG courses such as BDes: Animation and Interactive Media, BSc Games Development, BDes Games, BFA Digital Arts Animation, Master of Animation Games, and MSc Computer Animation Visual Effects. Maharashtra government has decided to allot 20 acre land at Goregaon Film City, Mumbai to build National Centre of Excellence in animation, visual effects, gaming and comics. The institute will reportedly be named as National Centre for Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics. The institute will be established on public-private partnership model. Thus, Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry as well as the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) are collaborating for the project. However, once established, the institute will be run by Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) wherein different visual effects, animation, gaming and comics courses will be offered to candidates at UG, PG, and PhD levels. The expected cost of establishment of the National Centre for Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics is about Rs 200 crore. The institute is expected to be operational within two years. As per the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, the industry for visual effects, animation, gaming and comics comprises more than 7% of the overall media and entertainment industry and is expected to be worth Rs 14,747 crore by the year, 2019.
