The Rizal Bill of 1956 (Horacio De la Costa and the Bishops)

 In defending the Catholic church position on The Rizal Billof 1956 in the senate, name
at least five (5) major arguments of Senator Franciscso "Soc" Rodrigo and the bishops
against the passage of the bill?
1st ARGUMENT
“Hence, a considerable portion of these novel is devoted to castigating or satirizing bad
priests and superstitious observaces.”
2ND ARGUMENT
The major argument raised by Senator Rodrigo was, the books of Rizal, specifically, Noli Me
Tangere and El Filibusterismo, were written to directly attack and mock the Catholic church.
He states, that it violates the Canon Law of 1933, he also argues that the books are clearly
anti-Catholic.
3RD ARGUMENT
Especially with the young, we foresee in the indiscriminate and undirected reading of the
novels a danger, since the young are "too apt to take as literally true whatever they see in
print."
4TH ARGUMENT
“Unless these distinctions which the mature and well instructed make almost automatically
in the course of their reading are made for the young... it is quite likely that Rizal's works, if
assigned as reading matter in our schools, may cause more harm than good.”
5TH ARGUMENT
However, the archbishop went on to say, in a statement directed to those of his archdiocese,
not merely that the novels were forbidden by the church. Rather, he emphasized, "without
due permission, it is a sin for any Catholic to read these novels in their entirety, or to keep,
publish, sell, translate, or communicate the same to others in any form” ([Santos) 1956, 350).
