Summary
of Chapter One
2-How did Rudolf Rassendyll account for his being idle (unemployed)?
He said that rich families like the Rassendylls didn't need to do things. He
said he had enough money to do anything he wanted.
5-What annoyed Rose when Rudolf was talking about his family?
He boasted of the Rassendyll family. Although Rose's family were rich, they
were less important than the Rassendylls.
6-According to Rudolf Rassendyll, how had he not been lazy all his life?
He had studied hard and learned a lot when he was at a German school and
university. He spoke several languages. He was good with a gun and a strong
swordsman. He was very good at riding a horse.
7-According to Rose, what made a distinction between Rudolf and his brother
Robert apart from Rudolf's red hair?
She said that Robert realised that his position in society had
responsibilities, but Rudolf only saw opportunities in his position.
10-What did Rudolf Rassendyll decide to do during the six months before starting
his new job?
He decided that he would visit Ruritania, a small country in the middle of
Europe.
13-How did the relationship by marriage between the Rassendylls and the
Elphbergs affect the appearance of Rudolf Rassendyll?
Rudolf Rassendyll was the latest one to have the appearance of the
Ruritanian royal family. He had red hair and a straight nose.
14-What did Rassendyll read that helped his decision to travel to Ruritania?
He read that Rudolf the Fifth was to become King of Ruritania in the next
three weeks, and that amazing celebrations were planned for that joyous
occasion. He decided to see such a fantastic event.
15-What lies did Rassendyll tell Rose before his journey to Ruritania? Why did he
tell her these lies?
First, he told her that he was going walking in the Alps because he did not
like to tell people where he went on his travels. Second, he told her he was
going to write a book about social problems in the country because he did
not want her to think he was being lazy.
19-What did George Featherly tell Rassendyll about the Duke of Strelsau?
He said that he was the half-brother to the King of Ruritania. He was his
father's favourite son.
20-Why did Rassendyll not tell George that he was going to Ruritania?
He didn't want the newspapers to know about his going to Ruritania.
21-Who did George talk to when he went with Rassendyll to the station? What did
she look like?
He talked to Antoinette de Mauban. She was a beautiful, tall and
fashionably dressed lady of about thirty.
22-Why did the guards at the Ruritanian border stare at Rassendyll and his
passport before letting him into the country?
Because Rassendyll looked exactly like the King of Ruritania.
24-Why wasn't the old woman (the hotel owner) at Zenda interested in what
happened in the capital, Strelsau?
Because she loved the Duke of Strelsau and she wished he was the new king
and not his brother.
25-According to the hotel owner, why was Duke Michael popular with many people
in Ruritania unlike his brother?
Duke Michael always lived in Ruritania and he cared about the people. As for
the King, he was almost a stranger. He had been abroad for most of his life
and not many people even knew what he looked like.
28-Who did Colonel Sapt and Fritz work for? What did they look like?
They worked for the King of Ruritania. Colonel Sapt was short but looked
very tough with light blue eyes. He looked like a soldier. Fritz was younger,
thin and of medium height. He looked like a gentleman.
29-To what extent were Rudolf Rassendyll and the King of Ruritania alike?
They looked so alike except perhaps for a centimetre or two difference in
height.
1 – Colonel Sapt and Fritz thought it was not a good idea that
Rassendyll should go to Strelsau on the coronation day.
However, the King invited Rassendyll to have dinner with him
at the hunting lodge.
2 –After the King and Rassendyll had eaten enough food, Josef,
the King’s servant brought them some delicious cake sent by
Duke Michael. The King ate the cake hungrily as if it had been
the first thing to eat, but Rassendyll ate only one piece.
11 - The city was partly old and partly new. There were wide,
modern streets where the rich people lived in big houses, but
behind these was a poor area with narrow streets where the
people lived in tiny, old, unhealthy houses.
12 - The poor people in the old part of the town didn't like the
King and supported Duke Michael who gave them hope for a
better life.
18. Why did Colonel Sapt think that if the King wasn't crowned that day, he
would never be King?
Because the whole country was waiting for the King that day. Most
of the army was waiting too, with Duke Michael leading it. They
wouldn't be happy.
19. What excuse did Rassendyll give to prove that it was impossible for him to
replace the King? How did Fritz refute his argument?
Summary
2) Why did Rudolf Rassendyll think carefully before riding through the poor
streets of the town?
Because the poor people who lived there supported Duke Michael and
Rudolf Rassendyll, who pretended to be the King, might be killed in this
part of town.
3) Why did Rudolf Rassendyll want to ride on his own through the poor area of
Strelsau?
♥He wanted the people who lived there to see that their King trusted
them.
4) On his way to the palace, Rudolf Rassendyll, who pretended to be the King, did
what the real King had never done. Discuss.
♥On his way to the palace, Rudolf Rassendyll rode alone through the poor
area of Strelsau where people supported Duke Michael and didn’t like the
King. He wanted the poor people to see that their King trusted them. This
was risky as people might kill him there.
6) What was the poor people’s reaction when they saw Rudolf Rassendyll?
♥Some of them were cheering and smiling but others were quiet and
looked at him angrily.
9) What was Duke Michael’s reaction as soon as he saw Rudolf Rassendyll before
the coronation?
♥His face became white.
10) What could Rudolf Rassendyll remember of the coronation later on?
♥He could remember the golden crown which was put on his head. He could
also remember the promises he was asked to read out and the beautiful
music that played when someone announced that Rudolf the Fifth became
King of Ruritania.
11) As Duke Michael congratulated Rudolf Rassendyll after the coronation, his
hands shook with anger. Give a reason.
♥Because he knew that Rudolf Rassendyll wasn’t the real King but he
couldn’t speak because people would ask him where the real King was.
12) Why did Rudolf Rassendyll feel worried when he saw a man he knew from
England?
♥He felt worried because he didn’t want anyone to recognize him.
13) What did Princess Flavia think about Rudolf Rassendyll ride through the old
town alone?
♥She thought the people there must have appreciated what Rassendyll
had done.
14) According to Flavia, how did the King (Rudolf Rassendyll) look different on
the day of coronation?
♥She thought he looked more tired and serious. She couldn’t believe that
he had really changed.
16) How did Sapt and Rudolf Rassendyll leave the palace after the coronation?
Why did they go this way?
♥They left the palace through a secret door that led to a dark secret
passage because they didn’t want anyone to see them.
17) What did Rudolf Rassendyll do so as not to be recognized while he was going
with Sapt to bring the King back?
♥His coat and hat covered his face and hair and he tried to stay low on
the horse.
18) What did Colonel Sapt do to persuade the guard's daughter at the gate to give
him the key?
♥He gave her a form from the King to give to her father and gave her a
coin.
20) Why did Colonel Sapt get off his horse and put his ear to the ground?
♥He wanted to make sure if there was anyone coming behind them.
22) Why didn't Colonel Sapt shoot Duke Michael when he saw him in the forest
with Max Holf?
♥He realized that it wouldn’t have helped the King at that moment.
23) What did Sapt and Rudolf find when they reached the hunting lodge?
♥ They found that it was dark and quiet and no one came out to meet
them. The King was kidnapped and Josef was killed.
25) Why does Rudolf Rassendyll suggest collecting every soldier in Strelsau?
26) Why was Sapt so anxious about Rassendyll’s decision to ride alone through
the old town?
♥Poor people who supported Duke Michael lived in the old town, so Rudolf
Rassendyll’s life was in danger.
27) Why did Duke Michael’s face turn white when he saw the King “Rudolf
Rassendyll”?
♥ Because “the King” was supposed to be lying unconscious in the hunting
lodge after eating the poisonous cakes. He knew that Rudolf Rassendyll
was not the real King.
28) Did Michael realize that Rassendyll wasn’t the real King? How do you know?
♥I think he did because he was sure that the King was poisoned by the
cakes he ate the night before. Also, the Duke's men kidnapped the King
from the hunting lodge.
29) Did Princess Flavia know that Rassendyll wasn’t the real King? What did she
say about him?
♥No, she didn’t know he wasn’t the real King. She said that he looked
different and he was more tired and serious.
30) Why did Rassendyll and Sapt need a permit to leave the city?
♥They needed a permit because the gates through the city wall were
closed at that time.
31) What did Sapt give the girl at the city gate?
♥He gave her a form from the King to show to her father and also gave
her a coin.
32) How did Sapt and Rassendyll get a permit from the King to leave the city?
♥Sapt had a form and a paper with the King’s signature on it and he copied
the signature from the paper.
33) Which way did Sapt and Rassendyll go at the fork in the road?
♥They went to the right to reach the hunting lodge.
34) Which way did Duke Michael and Max Holf go at the fork in the road?
The Prisoner of Zenda 36
♥They went to the left to reach the Castle of Zenda.
36) What did Sapt ask Rassendyll to do after they discovered that the King had
been kidnapped?
♥He asked him to go on pretending that he was the King as he had another
plan to save the King.
37) Why was Fritz against the idea that the King (Rassendyll) should become
popular with the poor people?
♥ Because Duke Michael wouldn’t like it.
39) What would have happened if Sapt, Fritz and Rudolf Rassendyll hadn’t
escaped to Strelsau?
♥They would have been killed in the hunting lodge.
40) What did Rudolf Rassendyll find in the dark room in the hunting lodge?
♥He found Josef’s body.
42) Why could Sapt and Rassendyll hear the people coming behind them?
♥They could hear the people coming behind them because the wind was
blowing towards them.
44) Why were the poor people in the old town happy to see the King (Rudolf
Rassendyll)?
♥ They hadn't seen the King before. They felt that he trusted them and
cared about them.
Summary
When Colonel Sapt discovered that the
King had been kidnapped from the hunting lodge and
his servant (Josef) had been killed, he asked Rudolf
Rassendyll to continue pretending to be the King so as
not to give Michael the chance to take the crown.
Rudolf Rassendyll thought that Sapt's plan was too
dangerous because people might realize that he was
not the real King. Colonel Sapt assured Rudolf
Rassendyll that Duke Michael would not say anything
because if he did, people would ask him where the
real King was. Rudolf Rassendyll still had doubts as
The Prisoner of Zenda 44
Princess Flavia thought that the King had changed.
Sapt agreed that the plan was a risk, but he told
Rudolf Rassendyll that if there was not a King in
Strelsau, the city would belong to Michael within 24
hours. Even if the real King were dead, Rudolf
Rassendyll would stay King.
While Sapt and Rudolf Rassendyll were
getting ready to leave the hunting lodge, Michael's
men arrived. They had brought spades with them.
They came to bury Josef's body in order to hide their
evil work. Sapt and Rudolf Rassendyll fought against
Michael's men. Rudolf Rassendyll knocked one man
off his horse, then hit another man with his sword.
Michael's men wanted to trap Rudolf Rassendyll but
he was able to escape through a gap between the
men. One of Michael's men shot Rudolf Rassendyll
and he felt a terrible pain in his finger.
Sapt put a bandage on Rudolf Rassendyll's
finger. They arrived at a farm. The farmer was very
kind. He gave them some food and allowed them to
rest. Rudolf Rassendyll covered his face so as not to
be recognized by anyone. He told the farmer that he
had a bad tooth. Then they reached Strelsau. The
streets of the capital were quiet as most of the people
were resting after the celebrations. At the palace, one
of Sapt's servants was waiting for them. His name
was Freyler. Sapt told him that the King caught his
finger in a door. Sapt told Freyler not to tell anyone
about what he had seen. When Fritz saw Rudolf
Rassendyll, he thought he was the King, so he jumped
up and bowed in front of him.
Suddenly there was a knock on the door. Sapt
asked Rudolf Rassendyll to go to bed and pretend that
he was asleep. A minute later Sapt came into the
bedroom and introduced Rudolf Rassendyll to Princess
Flavia's servant. The Princess sent her servant to find
2) Although Duke Michael and his men knew that Rudolf Rassendyll wasn't the
real King, they couldn't say anything about this. Explain.
♥Duke Michael and his men kidnapped the King and killed his servant. If
they told people that Rudolf Rassendyll wasn't the real King, people would
ask them where the real King was and they would appear guilty.
3) Why did Rudolf Rassendyll think that Sapt's second plan was too dangerous?
♥Sapt suggested that Rudolf Rassendyll return to the capital and continue
pretending to be the King. Rudolf Rassendyll thought it was too dangerous
as the Duke and his men knew that he wasn't the real King.
4) Where was King Rudolf Elphberg?
♥He was held prisoner by Duke Michael at the Castle of Zenda.
5) According to Sapt, why was it important to have a King in Strelsau?
♥King Rudolf Elphberg was held prisoner at the Castle of Zenda. If they
didn't have a King in Strelsau, Michael would take the crown.
6) According to Sapt, when would Rudolf Rassendyll stay king for life?
♥He would stay king for life if the real King (Rudolf Elphberg) was killed.
7) What kind of doubts did Rudolf Rassendyll have about pretending to be the
King?
♥He had doubts that someone would realise that he wasn't the real King
and in that case, his life would be in danger.
8) Why did Michael's men go back to the hunting lodge carrying spades?
♥They went back to bury Josef's body so as to hide their evil work.
3- How would his growing popularity help him with the people of Ruritania ?
It would help them to forgive his occasional bad decisions.
4- What does Sapt give Rassendyll ? Who does it come from as Sapt thinks ?
He gives him a letter. He thinks it comes from a woman as it is a
woman’s writing.
12- When does Sapt agree that Rassendyll would go and meet Antoinette?
When Rassendyll threatens either to go to the summer house or
back to England.
17- How does Rassendyll come out of the summer house alive?
He picks up an iron table and holds it by the legs. The top gives a
complete protection for him. Then, he calls the men to enter. He is
protected by the table top as it hits them and they all fall down the
steps.
21- Why doesn't Rassendyll want to ask the Princess for marriage?
He says that it wouldn't be fair to the Princess.
23- What does Rassendyll want to tell Flavia when Sapt interrupts him?
He wants to tell her that he isn't the real king.
24- Why is Sapt sure that Rassendvll will not do anything to harm the King?
He trusts Rassendyll and thinks that he is a good man.
27- The day after the ball, the Princess receives two letters. What are they
and who are they from?
One is an invitation to visit Zenda from Michael. The other letter is
a warning about the visit to Zenda and that the princess mustn't go
out without guards.
28- Who does Rassendyll think sent the second letter to the Princess?
He thinks this letter is from Antoinette de Mauban.
8- The next day, Sapt, Fritz and Rassendyll set off from the
capital and arrived
9- They had told these men that Michael had tried to kill the
King and that a good friend of the King's was held prisoner in
the castle. They knew it was their job to set him free.
13- Rassendyll kept the coat over his face as they entered the
inn and they asked to have a meal in a quiet room at the back.
When the owner's daughter brought the food, he uncovered
his face so she could see him.
14- The girl was afraid and said that she had told her mother
that it was the King who had visited them before. She asked
the King's forgiveness.
17- Rassendyll asked her to meet him and ask him to come to
the country house to meet the King. They ate the food and
went back to Tarlenheim.
18- As they got off their horses, Sapt ran out of the house to
meet them. He told them that one of their men, Bernenstein,
went out alone in the woods. He saw three men in the trees
and one shot him. He was upstairs in bed with a bullet in his
arm.
19- The next day, Rupert visited the house alone. He told
Rassendyll that the Duke offered him a safe trip to the
border and a million gold pieces.
21- Rupert gave him a cold look and asked his servant to
prepare his horse. Rassendyll followed him out of the house,
and just as he was about to climb on his horse, he stopped and
stepped nearer to Rassendyll and suddenly stabbed him in the
shoulder with his knife. Rassendyll cried out, but Rupert rode
off fast.
22- Rassendyll was put to bed and told to sleep. When he woke
up, it was dark and found Fritz beside him. He told him that a
doctor came and examined him and said that his arm would be
better soon.
23- Fritz also told him that the girl had brought Johann to the
house. He was downstairs ready and happy to help.
25- Johann told them all about the castle and Michael's plans
in detail.
26- He told them that there were two small rooms inside the
castle, which they could only reach by crossing the
drawbridge. The rooms were cut into the rock below the
ground. One room had no windows, so it was always lit by
candles. Behind it was a second room with a small window,
where the King was kept in chains. From the window, a large
stone pipe led down to the castle moat. The first room was
always guarded by three of the Six Men.
30- Johann said that the King knew all about these plans.
31- When Sapt heard this he told Rassendyll that this time
next year, he would still be King. It was impossible to save the
King alive. Rassendyll felt worried and afraid when he
remembered that Michael would always be there ready to take
his place.
33- When Johann left, Rassendyll thought hard and said that
there were two ways in which the King could come out of
Zenda alive, one was if they had a miracle, and the other was
if one of the Duke's men betrayed him.
2- Why can’t Michael legally become King unless he marries the Princess?
Because his mother was not royal.
5- What reason does Rassendyll give Princess Flavia for leaving Strelsau?
He tells her that he is leaving Strelsau to go hunting.
8- Where do Rassendyll and his men stay for their hunting trip?
They stay in a large, modern country house called “Tarlenheim”.
12- Who does Michael send to welcome the King (Rassendyll) at the country
house of Tarlenheim?
He sends the three Ruritanian gentlemen (Lauengram, Krafstein, and
Rupert Hentzau).
13- What reason does Duke Michael give for not visiting the “King”
Rassendyll or inviting him to his castle?
The Duke sends them a message that he and many of his servants
have a dangerous illness, so it is best if they stay away.
14- What does Colonel Sapt tell Rassendyll about Rupert Hentzau when he
first comes to the country house?
He tells Rassendyll that Rupert's the worst criminal of all the Six
Men.
16- What does the innkeeper’s daughter do when Rassendyll (the King)
uncovers his face?
She cries and almost drops the plates.
18- About whom does Rassendyll (the king) ask the girl? Why?
20- What does Rassendyll (the King) want from the girl?
He wants her to ask Johann to meet her tomorrow night at ten
o'clock, then bring him to their house.
21- What happened to Bernenstein while Fritz and Rassendyll are out?
Bernenstein, went out alone in the woods. He saw three men in the
trees and one shot him. He's in bed with a bullet in his arm.
22- What message does Rupert Hentzau bring the next day?
The Duke offers Rassendyll a safe journey to the border and a million
gold pieces.
25- What does Rassendvll notice about Johann while talking to him ?
He notices that he is a weak man, but not a wicked one. He works for
Michael because he is afraid of him not because he likes him.
26- What does Johann tell Rassendvll about the King’s place?
He tells them that there are two underground, small rooms inside the
castle, reached only by crossing the drawbridge. One room had no
windows and behind it the other room with a small window, where the
King is kept in chains. From the window a large stone pipe led down to
the castle moat.
28- What is the plan if they are attacked by a lot of soldiers? How will they
kill the King and what will they do with the body?
There will be no resistance . The King would be quietly murdered and
his body put down the pipe and one of the six would take his place
pretending that Michael had put him there because he'd been rude to
Antoinette de Mauban.
30- In Rassendvll’s opinion, what are the only two ways to save the King?
One is if they have a miracle, and the other is that one of the Duke's
men betrays him.
3. Rassendyll says that the situation they are in is the strangest thing in the
history of any country. Discuss.
The strangest thing is that the King's brother and a pretend King act
out a war for the life of a sick King, with just a few people knowing
about it.
4. Who set out tor Zenda secretly? What do they take with them?
Sapt and Rassendyll, with Fritz and seven men with horses, set out
secretly for the Castle of Zenda. All have weapons.
11. Why doesn't Rassendyll worry that the boat can be heard?
Because the wind is blowing hard.
13. Why do the seven gentlemen go with Rassendyll, Sapt and Fritz to the
castle? What do they do?
To fight with them to save the prisoner. They wait with the horses a
few hundred metres from the castle. When Sapt whistles to them,
they come and get Rassendyll, Sapt and Fritz with their horses. They
kill Lauengram and Krafstein.
14.Who gets killed in the fight in the woods? Who runs away?
Max Holf, Lauengram, Krafstein and three of Rassendyll’s men get
killed but Rupert runs away.
19. What does Rudolf Rassendyll tell the Chief of the Strelsau Police?
He tells him to go back to Strelsau. Rassendyll (the King) will look into
this for him. He can return in two weeks and Rassendyll (the King) will
tell him what he has found.
21.Rassendyll meets Rupert the next day while they are out riding. What
plans do they offer each other?
Rassendyll’s Plan: Rassendyll tells Rupert if he lets the prisoner go
free, Rassendyll can help him.
Rupert’s Plan: Rupert tells Rassendyll to attack the castle bravely.
Fritz and Sapt must die, and so must Michael and the King. That will
leave two men alive: Rupert and Rassendyll . Rassendyll will stay as the
King, and Rupert will have a reward.
26. What does Rassendyll the King do to persuade Johann to return to the
castle?
Rassendyll pays him well to go back and act as a spy.
31. What does Rassendyll (the King) ask Marshal Strakencz to do?
Marshal Strakencz will guard the house and the Princess and if, the
next day, they haven't returned, he will march to the castle and ask
The Prisoner of Zenda 99
to see the King at once. If the King is not there, he will quickly take
Princess Flavia back to the capital where she will become Queen.
32.Why does Rupert Hentzau swim across the moat to go back to the
mansion? Why doesn't he use the drawbridge?
It seems that he has a plan for this dark night. He doesn't use the
drawbridge as it is lifted up.
9- Rassendyll could enter the room where the King was being
kept prisoner. When he opened the first door, he found
himself at the top of some steps which led into a cold, dark
room.
10- Rassendyll heard voices behind the second door where the
King was kept. It was Detchard wondering whether they
should kill the King or not. Suddenly Bersoni appeared in front
of Rassendyll. Rassendyll struck him with his sword.
11- Detchard closed the door fast. As he was alone in the room
with the King, Rassendyll knew the King was in real danger. So
he quickly unlocked the door of the second room with one of
the keys he took from De Gautet.
17- The drawbridge was now down once more. Rupert stood in
the middle of the bridge with his sword, while the door to the
mansion at the other end of the drawbridge was guarded by
some very frightened-looking servants, as well as Johann,
unhurt.
him that he had already killed the Duke. She appeared pointing
a gun at him. Rupert once again jumped quickly into the water
below the bridge.
19- Sapt and his men finally arrived at the front door, on the
other side of the mansion. Feeling confident that the King
would be safe, Rassendyll ran after Rupert and also jumped
into the water.

• Chasing the Last of the Six Men
22- Rassendyll told him that he was the last of the Six Men.
He also told him that he saved the King. Rassendyll tried to hit
Rupert with his sword. He tried once and twice until he could
cut his cheek.
24- Fritz got off his horse and ran up to Rassendyll as he fell
to the ground. He told him that the King was safe. The boy
stood watching in amazement. After a long rest, Rassendyll
felt strong enough to walk back, leaning heavily on Fritz's arm.
•Antoinette’s Story
25- Later Rassendyll was told the story of Antoinette and the
events of the Castle. A few months earlier, the Duke had met
Antoinette de Mauban in Paris and he invited her to Ruritania
to see the coronation. She respected the Duke and was
pleased to be his guest.
27- When the Duke found out that she had warned Rassendyll
in Strelsau, he tricked Antoinette de Mauban by inviting her
and her servants to his castle. Once she was there, he made
The Prisoner of Zenda 108
sure they could not leave in order to stop her telling anyone
about his plan.
29- It took a long time before Sapt and his men could finally
enter the mansion.
Soon Sapt found the King lying in his prison, hurt but still
-alive. He was carried with his face covered to the mansion,
where Antoinette helped to look after the poor King until
another doctor arrived.
32- When they saw her coach, Fritz and Rassendyll quickly hid
behind a tree. The boy whose horse Rupert had taken had
followed them. He was very excited and told the Princess that
the King was behind the tree.
33- The Princess and the Marshal stopped the coach. Sapt
arrived at the place, too. The Princess was helped down from
the coach. She then walked alone with Sapt to Rassendyll. She
saw him and Sapt told her he wasn't the King. He took her to
the Castle.
