Students: Jakirah, JaNae, Elijah, Jacob

Purpose: For three of my students the focus will be to work on onset sounds and nonsense
words. For Jacob the focus will be to continue working on his handwriting from the day before
as well as sight words, forming letters, and onset sounds on the Teach Me: Kindergarten app.

B. Recognize that spoken words are represented in written language by specific
sequences of letters.

C. Understand that words are separated by spaces in print.

D. Recognize and name all upper– and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

RF.K.2 Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds phonemes).

B. Count, pronounce, blend, and segment syllables in spoken words.

D. Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in
three–phoneme (consonant–vowel–consonant, or CVC) words.* (This does not include
CVCs ending with /l/, /r/, or /x/.)

Specific Outcomes: Jakirah, JaNae, and Elijah will continue to work on onset sounds in a fun
way with stickers, as well as spell some words out. They will also be working on nonsense words
and spelling some of those words out. For Jacob the main goal will be to finish his handwriting
observation worksheet, as well as to continue working with onset sounds, sight words, and
forming letters on the Teach Me: Kindergarten app with my assistance.

App Flow: Magnetic ABC, Doodle Buddy, Teach Me: Kindergarten

Other Materials: Nonsense Word Go Fish, Handwriting Observation Worksheet
Procedures: For Jakirah, JaNae, and Elijah we will begin by working on the Magnetic ABC app.
I will have them choose various stickers once they choose a sticker I will have the place the letter
that makes the beginning sound next to it. This will be good way for them to practice their onset
sounds skills. So if they choose a picture of a “cat” they will place a “c” next to it. With some of
the easier stickers I may have them spell out the word like cat, dog, boy, girl or other words.
After that we are going to move on and play Nonsense Word Go Fish, this will give them a fun
friday activity and allow them to work on their nonsense words and letter sounds. If we still have
time after this we will spell some nonsense words on the Doodle Buddy app, I will give them a
nonsense word and have them spell it for me. For Jacob, we are going to finish his handwriting
observation sheet. That will take up a good chunk of time for him, so with our remaining time we
are going to go on the Teach Me: Kindergarten app and he can work through the app, which
provides work on a variety of literacy skills which will be good for Jacob.

Lesson Assessment: My lesson today went really well, I ended up only working with Jakirah
and JaNae and then worked with Jason for the first time. The kids really did well with the onset
sound activity and they enjoyed the nonsense word go fish game, it was a fun friday activity!

Field Notes:
Jakirah: During the onset sound activity on Magnetic ABC, she did excellent. She chose some
stickers, a sun, duck, house, human, heart, and some others and was able to place the onset sound
letter next to the sticker with no help at all. She put a k for cloud, but the sounds are the same so
that was understandable. During the go fish game with nonsense words she did very well. Each
time she would pronounce a word she would sound it out and then blend it together very well.

JaNae: She did very well on the onset sound activity, towards the end she was getting distracted
and just playing with the stickers. But in the beginning she was focused and was able to match
the onset sounds for all of her stickers. During go fish with the nonsense words she did fairly
well. Sometimes she would sound out the word and when she would blend it she’d leave out the
onset sound. So for “zag” she’d sound it out properly but then blend it as “ag.” Other than that
happening a couple times she did very well with the activity.
Jason: Today was the first time I had Jason and he is very smart. He did the onset sounds with
ease, d for duck, w for women, m for men. He then asked if he could spell some of the words so
he did. He spelt block, men, and car all the right way on his own. He spelt block backwards at
first but I think that was just because he was distracted because when I had him read it he
changed it first. During the nonsense go fish game he wouldn’t sound out the words he just knew
how to say them. He also kept an eye on my cards and the ones in the pile to draw from were
face down but you could still see through them sort of, so he would look to pick a card that I had
in my hand so he could get a match. This was really impressive because when looking through
the card backs the words are backwards.
