CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

This chapter serves as an introductory chapter. It contains the Background of the Study,

Statement of the Problem, Scope and Delimitation, Significance of the Study and Definition of

Terms.

Background of the study

If you were to walk into each classrooms here in CSFJ, you’ll find that many

rooms are equipped with tv’s. These devices serve as a teaching aide, not as entertainment.

Instructional videos gives student a chance to witness the use of tools and strategies they have

been learning at school in a practical setting. Some students do not learn well just from teachers.

Tv’s have been known to hold people attention for longer spans that one person. To many

students it seems like a hassle to search for information on a computer. Technology we allows

many more students to be actively thinking about information, making choice, and executing

skills than typical in teachers-led lessons. Moreover, when technology is used as a tool to support

students in performing tasks, the students are in the position as well of defining their goals,

making design decisions and evaluating their progress. Technologies can help the students in

making projects, tasks, and the most important is the research. One of the useful is the tapping of

I.D’s, where you can just tap are in at that time and as well as if you go out of the campus.
Many of the students nowadays are involve of using the advance technology.

Technology plays an important role in the lives of the students, it makes our task easier and

comfortable. Several manual task can be automated thanks to the technology. Also the advance

technology revolutionized the field of education. In every schools there are computers, tv’s and

yopad that will help the students to learn faster. It’s also easy for the teachers to make their

lessons through powerpoint presentations, and same for the students. as for this, it is easy to

acquire knowledge due to the advancement of technology. This also plays an important role to

the schools, it gives security through CCTV’s. in this equipment we can assure the safety and

security of the students. We can monitor the behaviour of the students whether there are bullies,

incidents or even burglary issues such this are need to be given the appropriate consideration.

Having surveillance is a solution to decrease or prevent this to be happen. So, advance

technology is really important to the lives of students.

Statement of the Problem

This ought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the Advantage and Disadvantage of Advance Technology?

2. How does the Advance Technology affect the lives of student nowadays?

3. How does Advance Technology helps the students in their studies?

4. How does the student use the Advance Technology in a proper way?

5. Why does the Advance Technology can harm the student?

Hypothesis

1. The advantage of advance technology is that, it can save time, money and our lives will

be easier .

2. The advance technology affects the life of students nowadays in terms of being addicted

on the computer games and they also do cutting classes.

3. The advance technology helps the students to be more active in making choices about

how to generate, obtain, manipulate or display information.

4. The students use the advance technology in a proper way by making projects. It also

gives the students the oppurtunity to enhance the interaction with their classmates and

instructors by encouraging collaboration and it helps students to be more responsible.

5. The advance technology can harm the students in their health because they abused it

instead of using it in a proper way.

Theoretical and Conceptual Framework

Over time, learning became easier and faster with the help of different tools and methods.

Blackboards have been used for at least a millennium, books and pamphlets have held a

prominent role in education. Now we have innovated technologies that can be used for quicker

and easier learning of every student. Technology is a social product, patterned by the conditions

of its creation and use. At every stage in both the generation and implementation of new

technologies a variety of technical options are available. Technology is constantly evolving and

maturing.
Frederick Ferré’s Philosophy Of Technology (1988) is a wonderful introduction to the

study of this subject and has become a widely assigned textbook used in many college courses.

(“practical implementations of intelligence” (with the caveat that “‘Practical’ requires that they

not be wholly ends in themselves; ‘implementations’ entails that a technology be somehow

concretely embodied, normally in implements or artifacts, sometimes simply in social

organization…”). In his 2007 book, A Culture of Improvement: Technology and the Western

Millennium, University of Maryland historian Robert Friedel. “By technology we typically mean

the knowledge and instruments that humans use to accomplish the purposes of life.” In his

December 1937 essay in Vol. 2, Issue No. 6 of the American Sociological Review, “Technology

and State Government,” “technology includes all tools, machines, utensils, weapons,

instruments, housing, clothing, communicating and transporting devices and the skills by which

we produce and use them.” (p. 860). Alfred P. Sloan Foundation / Richard Rhodes, in his 1999

book, Visions of Technology: A Century Of Vital Debate About Machines Systems And The

Human World, “Technology is the application of science, engineering and industrial

organization to create a human-build world.” (p. 19). Just a few pages later, however, Rhodes

notes that is probably too simplistic: “Ask a friend today to define technology and you might

hear words like ‘machines,’ ‘engineering,’ ‘science.’ Most of us aren’t even sure where science

leaves off and technology begins. Neither are the experts.”

The researchers used Independent Variable- Dependent Variable paradigm format,

wherein the frequency of use of devices is the independent variable because it will affect the

corresponding dependent variable which is the effect of devices in learning of the students.

Significance of the Study

In the research about the effects of the advance technology into the lives of the students,

there is much significance that the equipment’s of advance technology provides good benefit to

the lives of students but sometimes, those equipment such as computer, phones and other

advance technology equipment the one who destruct the study of the students; there is much

significance that proves the internet has many benefits.

Here are the following:

Study Aid

 The equipment’s of the advance technology has become useful and for students

of all ages. A learning aid is something intended to enhance the learning of the

students and retention by the learner. They may include, but are not limited to:

written materials, visualizations, charts, diagrams, processes, strategies, or any

other appropriate item.

Information Source

 The internet has quickly replaced the library as the main source of school

research by using the devices such as computers and other advance equipment’s.
The main advantage of using internet on the devices are that it is available all the

time.

Communication

 Mostly device that been using to communicate is a mobile phone or smartphone.

It allows the parents and teachers to stay in constant communication, an essential

part of education, parents are constantly aware of what is happening in the

classroom and can communicate with teachers about students when necessary.

Distance Learning

 There are devices that a number of colleges, universities and even in a high

school level uses this devices to offer distance learning \s. These educational

courses are offered online and consists of internet-based assignment and

communications.

Effects

 It may causes you addiction because of the internet games by using the devices

that can entertain you and there is a possibility that you can forget your works

and you can’t focus on your studies specially the students.

Scope and Delimitation

We can define technology broadly as any “tool” a teacher uses to convey the lesson or interact

with students. That can range from a whiteboard and marker (low-tech) to a tablet with a stylus (high-

tech) and beyond. This study mainly focused on the effects of technology devices towards in students of
Colegio de San Francisco Javier INC. It was delimited to the grade 9 students were it contain of 3 sections

namely St Jacobis, St. Thouret and St. Laboure.

Definitions of Terms

Technology

 Technology is the sum of techniques, skills, methods, and processes used in the

production of goods or services or in the accomplishment of objectives, such as

scientific investigation. Technology can be the knowledge of techniques,

processes, and the like, or it can be embedded in machines to allow for operation

without detailed knowledge of their workings. Systems (e. g. machines) applying

technology by taking an input, changing it according to the system's use, and then

producing an outcome are referred to as technology systems or technological

systems.

Internet

 The Internet (portmanteau of interconnected network) is the global system of

interconnected computer networks that uses the Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP)

to link devices worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of private,

public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope,

linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless, and optical networking

technologies.
Technology Addiction

 Addiction is a complex condition, a brain disease that is manifested by

compulsive substance use despite harmful consequence. Technology addiction is

an impulse control disorder that involves the obsessive use of mobile devices,

the internet or video games, despite negative consequences to the user of the

technology. The disorder may also be referred to as digital addiction or internet

addiction.
