Basic Concept of Disaster

and Disaster Risk

The Philippines, by virtue of its location, climate

and topography, is one of the most disaster-
prone countries in the world (Alampay, 2014).
Basic Concept of Disaster
and Disaster Risk

The Philippines belong to the Pacific Ring of Fire where the

oceanic Philippine plate and several smaller micro-plates are
subducting along the Philippine Trench to the E, and the
Luzon, Sulu and several other small Trenches to the W.
Basic Concept of Disaster
and Disaster Risk

The Philippines also is a part of the Circum Pacific seismic

belt and is positioned in two major tectonic plates, the
Euroasian and Pacific plates

NOTE: these two plates are responsible for the creation of mountain ranges,
volcanoes, islands earthquakes and tsunamis.
Climate Change
Climate change is a long-term change in the average
weather patterns that have come to define Earth’s
local, regional and global climates. These changes
have a broad range of observed effects that are
synonymous with the term.
Causes of
Climate Change
Changes observed in Earth’s climate since the early
20th century are primarily driven by human
activities, particularly fossil fuel burning, which
increases heat-trapping greenhouse gas levels in
Earth’s atmosphere, raising Earth’s average surface
temperature.
Causes of
Climate Change
Green house Effect
Greenhouse gases are gases that can trap heat. They get their name from
greenhouses. A greenhouse is full of windows that let in sunlight. That
sunlight creates warmth. The big trick of a greenhouse is that it doesn’t let
that warmth escape.
The Greenhouse Gases
Global Warming

Global warming is the long-term heating of Earth’s

climate system observed since the pre-industrial
period (between 1850 and 1900) due to human
activities, primarily fossil fuel burning, which
increases heat-trapping greenhouse gas levels in
Earth’s atmosphere.
Effects of Climate Change
1. Climate change will be insanely expensive.
2. Hundreds of millions of people may be
displaced by 2050.
3. Dengue and malaria could spread in the U.S.
4. Western wildfires could burn up to eight
times as much land by 2100.
Effects of Climate Change
5. An additional 8% of the world population will
experience water scarcity by 2100.
6. Hurricanes could become up to 11% more intense
and 20% wetter by 2100.
7. Millions of people and trillions in assets are at
risk in coastal cities
Effects of Climate Change
8. 136 of the world's most historic places could be in jeopardy.
9. Some small island nations could be destroyed.
10. 100% of reefs may be at risk of extinction by 2050.
11. Increasing droughts will make the driest regions even drier.
