Reflection on the Binga Dam Plant Visit last January 31, 2020
It was my first time going off town after my last field trip way back 2015 so it’s kind a bit exciting and I know
for sure, I could learn much. Since it was an educational visit, I had so much more to learn about how to
plan and build dams. As per Hon. Melchor D. Diclas, one of the stakeholders council member from BIPCHS
(Binga Indigenous People’s Cultural Heritage Site), told us the history of Binga Dam which started in year
1960 which National Power Corporation(NPC) manage the operation within the dam, the installed capacity
which BInga Dam can hold is up to 100 MW with 4 Turbines. As of 2008 up to now, SN Aboitiz Power
Benguet, Inc. are the newest plant operators which they told us, for the past 60 years, they’ve managed to
upgrade 4x better than it was before which from 4 turbines, now it has 16 turbines that produce 400 MW of
more. They also explained how hydroelectric power system works, it was stated that flowing water is
directed to a turbine which causes the turbine to rotate which it converts kinetic energy into a mechanical
energy which converted also to electric energy by the use of turbine generator. This turbine generator
works because of a magnet moving inside of the shaft which causes the conductor to produce electric
current.
As for the construction, it started in August 1956, which on the contrary, it was stated that “3 years and 7
months to complete the project”. It was named after the place of its location Barrio Binga in Itogon, Benguet
Province some 31 kilometers east of Baguio City and was constructed along the Agno River.
As of now, they’ve rehabilitated and refurbish their main inlet valve while also upgrading their Intake and
Tower Gates. They’ve also added reservoirs which its elevation is almost 580 meters above sea level while
its usable storage is 48.2 MCM. Safety precautions and regulations is advised by the people from Binga
Dam.
