ORE

INTRODUCTION
 An ore is a special type of rock that contains a large enough
amount of a particular mineral (usually a metal) to make it
economically practical to extract that mineral from the
surrounding rock.
 The ores are extracted from earth through mining, then they
undergo refinement to extract valuable elements.
 This whole process of formation of ore from mining to extracting
elements is called ore genesis.
 There are many metal ores:
 Silicates
 Carbonates
 Oxides
 Sulphates
 Native metals

Classification:
1)Ferrous ore- They contain iron i.e, Fe2+ ; are magnetic in
nature and very less resistant to corrosion.
 They generally consist of alloys of iron which are
stainless steel , mild steel, carbon steel, pig iron and
other elements such as chromium, nickel, titanium.
 Ferrous metals are known for their strength and
magnetic properties.
 Ferrous metals are used in both architectural and
industrial fabrication.
 They are also used in bridges, vechicle parts and
railroads. Reference-(allmetalsfab.com)

2)Non-Ferrous Ores- They do not contain appreciable

amount of iron in them; are non-magnetic and more
corrosion resistant.
 They include- Aluminium, copper, lead, zinc, tin,
and alloys such as brass and bronze. Precious
metals such as Gold, Silver and Platinum are also
non-ferrous.
 These are generally obtained through minerals
such as sulfides, silicates and carbonates.
Uses:
 They are mainly used in electrical fittings,
pipes, in roofing and gutter-covers.
 Due to their light-weight, they are used in
aircrafts and in hovercrafts.
 Used in manufacturing household utensils.
 Lead is used in soldering process.
 Bronze is utilized in hydraulic fittings and
bearings.
 Due to the extensive use, non-ferrous scrap metals are
usually recycled.
