Andi Chaerunnisa, 2019. Improving Speaking Ability through Board Game of the
Eighth Grade Students at SMP Negeri 9 Palu. Skripsi, English Education Study
Program, Language and art Education Department, Teacher and Education Faculty,
Tadulako University. Under the supervision of Ferry Rita.

The objective of this research is to prove whether or not the use of Board Game
technique can improve the speaking ability of the eighth grade students at SMP
Negeri 9 Palu. The quasi-experimental research design was used. The population of
this research was the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 9 Palu that consisted of
10 classes. The sample was drawn by applying cluster sampling technique to select
an experimental group and control group. The data were collected by using oral
pretest and posttest. The pretest was administered to measure the students’ speaking
ability before the treatment, while the posttest was administered to measure the
students’ speaking ability after the treatment. The result of the pretest shows that the
mean score of the experimental group is lower than the control group. The scores
increased on the posttest (89.42) for the experimental group and (71.63) for the
control group. Furthermore, the result of data analysis shows that t-counted (4.64) is
greater than the t-table (1.9895). It indicates that the research hypothesis accepted.
Thus, the applying of Board Game technique has a positive effect on speaking ability
of the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 9 Palu.
