PREFACE

This report is regarding our Winter Internship Project at SARE JAHAN SE ACHA, a
spit free India campaign, spreading awareness of evils of spitting. Sare Jahan Se Acha,
NGO, gave us the opportunity to complete 8 different activities in order to spread
awareness for not to spit in open areas like on road, in garden, on walls etc., but to use
dustbin for spitting.

Working for this NGO has taught us some important managerial lessons. This report
describes experience and learning we got while working for Sare Jahan Se Acha.

This report contains the details of the organization and the details of the activities we
have worked upon. The NGO as well as the institute encouraged to use creative
methods and achieve the goal in the Pimpri-Chinchwad area of Pune District.

The basic agenda of the Winter Internship program is to make prominent growth as an
individual and to contribute towards the development of society. To make India a
better place to live in, for us and the future generations of India. And we can be a
helping hand to promote the message in small areas of Pune and eventually make an
effort to spread the same in other parts of the country.

A. ABOUT SARE JAHAN SE ACHA

A smile to a stranger, hand extended to a blind man crossing the road, make way for
the ambulance or a prayer for the soldier fighting for our safety… Goodness is a
simple word that has the power to make the world a beautiful place…

Amidst the world of big bad news, the goodness stories get sidelined. But we must
remember, positivity inspires positivity. When you’re in tough times, all you expect is
one good human being to give you that assurance of getting back. And when you do it
yourself, it is sure to return.

At Sare Jahan Se Acha, it’s a circle of goodness we want to create. We’re intending to
do that by spreading these small and big goodness stories to inspire everyone else to
do the same. Right from stories in the Defence sector to everyday lives.
And when goodness will attain its power, the effect will not be anything less than
better human beings, better society and a better country. A country better than the
entire world. And that means Sare Jahan Se Acha.

Let’s join hands and hearts to spread goodness.

Sare Jahan Se Acha was started with one objective i.e. can negativity turned up into
positivity and Mr. Raja Narasimhan is a firm believer in goodness. He took the baton
in his hand to head- start the journey. Sare Jahan Se Acha works with a vision to make
India a place where goodness thrives and a mission of making tangible or intangible
difference to people who have lived the life of goodness and inspired change in that
direction.

10
The NGO is focusing on our country’s martyrs who lost their lives to protect us, by
making a promising change in the lives of their families and also by sharing their
stories of will, strength and unwavering love for their country.

Sare Jahan se Acha is also working hard on innovating solutions for a Spit Free India
to avoid uncalled for health hazards. Another area of action is to help wandering off
Dementia patients so that they may not suffer the agony of separating from their loved
ones. INDIES, Connect and Care is the flagship project of Sare Jahan Se Acha aimed
at helping volunteers doing good work for stray dogs more effectively and efficiently.
They are also in a process of setting up a toll-free call centre for senior citizens. Name

III. METHODOLOGY-
A methodology does not set out to provide solutions—it is therefore, not the same as a
method. Instead, a methodology offers the theoretical underpinning for understanding
which method, set of methods, or best practices can be applied to a specific case.
Methodology means the activities we have done during our campaign to spread
awareness about “Anti-Spitting”.

Activity 1: Jamming
There were around 4 students singing the songs while remaining 3 students were
holding the banners and shouting the slogans, another 2 students were volunteers
asking people to watch the jamming for few minutes and 1 student was holding the
camera to create videos for sharing in the social media pages of spit free India
campaign.
This helped us to spread the awareness of spitting hazards amongst the crowd that
were present. People were curious and asking about the campaign and each member of
the team was sharing information of the same.
This activity required a lot of planning and practicing. Painting banners, creating
slogans, composing song with meaningful message were some of the tools used to
effectively spread the message of anti-spitting.
Jamming was performed at places where the crowd was maximum which includes
mostly traffic signals and chowk. This activity was frequently performed in the same
place for 3-4 days to make a remark in that particular area.

16
Figure 1 Street jamming near dange chowk
Activity 2: Street play

As the name suggests this activity is mostly performed in crowded places. A group of
students sit in a circle and spread the awareness in the form of a skit.
This activity was performed by the other half members, so that each and every
member of the group actively participates, and contributes towards the task. Street
play requires a lot of shouting and performing with a high pitch voice.
It was performed at the Vallabhnagar bus stand, Hinjewadi chowk, Pune Muncipal
Corporation garden, Chinchwad railway station, Dange chowk. The act was highly
appreciated by the authorities and they also discussed the other issues that are faced by
the public.
This was a very creative act which was planned and rehearsed in a very short time
period. Combined with posters and slogans, it was made attractive, to grab the
attention of the public present over there.

17
Activity 3: Flash Mob

Flash mob is a type of act where people perform a seemingly random act and then
disperse. The act was performed by 8 students with 1 camera person. The message we
sent out through the act was immense and powerful.
This was mostly performed in the bus stands, railway stations etc. where we can get
maximum public attention and spread awareness about our campaign. The people
present there easily connect with the act and enable them to grasp the message.
The flash mob required a lot of planning and rehearsal. In order to perform flawlessly
in proper synchronization and coordination of every member was a must.
The curiosity of the public while doing the flash mob encouraged us to perform better
and also helped us to spread our message effectively.

18
Activity 4: Vox Pop

Vox pop is the activity that was majorly performed in all the areas. Wherever the
performances took place, there were students who performed Vox pop there and also
in nearby areas.

It is basically interacting with people and recording it. A questionnaire of around 5-10
questions was prepared and it was used to spread the awareness in the Pimpri-
Chinchwad area.

A lot of positive response was received when the team members interacted with them,
many suggestions were received to help us fight against this issue.

A short film was created by one of the group members and uploaded it on YouTube,
Facebook to create awareness about the anti-spitting.

19
Activity 5: Spitting Cup Distribution

Spitting bags were made using old newspapers of square and cone shape. Square cup
is of 7cm and cone cup are of length 7 cm. This were distributed among the people in
bus stands, chowks, railway stations and markets.
Main objective of distributing spit bags was to stop people from spitting in public
places, instead they can use this spit bags to spit and then throw them in dustbins. It
can be good source of income for people with weak financial positions as these bags
can be made very easily and can be sold at paan shops at profitable rate. We also
encouraged paan shop owners to keep these spit bags with them and give them to
people who buy paan and gutkha.

V. LEARNINGS DURING THE FIELD WORK

 To be a Multitasking person as we have to perform according to the situations.

 To remove hesitation within ourselves to speak for Don’t Spit encourage others not
to hesitate while seeing someone spitting.
 We learned about the Strategic planning helps in plan our activities for every day
 We prepare small and catchy slogans like “Thunko Naaka” and “Zindagi ek safar
hai suhana, yaha thuk ke kyu tumhe hai jana” to spread awareness in crowded
areas.
 We learned different activities every time like flash mob and interacting with
students which really inspire us for this project
 Giving speech to the students really helps me to conquer my fear on addressing
large number of audiences.
 We targeted government schools to make students aware of evils of spiting in open area
so that they can stop teachers, their family members and people in their surroundings
from spitting in open area.

We interacted with the government employees of PCMC Municipal Corporation and

get to know that government is working hard to reduce waste generation and
segregating waste. They appreciated our efforts towards anti spitting campaigns.

26
VI. RECOMMENDATIONS
Working with Sare Jahan Se Acha gave us new experience about the typical Indian
society, how people here spit in public areas. While working with Ngo in Spit Free
India we interacted with different people like local pan vendors, traffic police, local
police, general public and kids. After interacting with them we got to know that every
year many Ngo’s try to keep public areas clean, public school and stations clean but
the fault we got is in the public. We spread the diseases around us .Pan Vendors don’t
have any spit bins near there shop.

 An idea of spitting cups we came into the market and distributed cups in
PCMC area. this spitting cups were made from bio-degradable material which
was completely in the favour of the nature.
 We asked pan vendors to start keeping a big pot full of mud so that people can
spit in that pot. Our suggestion really helped pan vendors and later while
collecting the feedbacks they thanked us for this advice.
 We created awareness which we all felt during internship is must, this should
be done in regular intervals so that spit free campaign can really leave good
impact and give us permanent solution.

27
CONCLUSION

It was a great experience working for the NGO because knowing what is the situation
outside which is still unnoticed and to contribute a small part towards social cause.
Going into actual scenario to deal with people really helps in gaining experience.
Through this internship, learning to speak wisely at different situations so that it may
not target any community or generate inappropriate feelings was great achievement.
Everyone came in contact during this internship were really helpful and cooperative.
Planning of going outside and execute planned activity on day one of internship was
not so easy but 15 days spent was very good and properly invested. Spreading
awareness for the well-being of the society. Each and every member of the group was
very enthusiastic and each incident was a different experience. Thanking everyone
who embarked on this wonderful journey and wish all the very best for their future.
