HIGH FLEXIBILITY CEMENT

Young’s Modulus (modulus of elasticity) - measure of the ability of a material to

withstand changes in length under tension or compression

𝐹 (𝐿𝑛 − 𝐿𝑜)
𝐸= 𝑋 𝑝𝑠𝑖
𝐴 𝐿𝑜

E = (stress) X (length change with regard to original length)

Young’s Modulus number only valid under elastic deformation region

E for steel is 3 times than aluminium = takes 3 times force to stretch a steel

Poisson’s Ratio - ratio of the transverse strain to the longitudinal strain

- Measure ratio of length change only, Force is not considered.
 = - trans / longitudinal
Trans = along the stretch direction
Cement properties under casing high pressure test:
- High internal pressure → cement being pressed radially (compressed
transversely)
- Effect of Young’s Modulus:
o Cement with low E:
▪ high reduction in radial (thickness) length
▪ susceptible to plastic deformation under pressure
o Cement with high E:
▪ Under high pressure, thickness changes still under elastic region
▪ Return to its original thickness once pressure is bled off
- Effect of Possion’s Ratio:
o Transverse (thickness) length ↓
o Longitude (axial) length ↑
o Too much axial length increment could shear the cement
o Good cement should have low Poisson’s Ratio
Flexible Cement (for HP well or for high pressure casing test requirement)
shall be designed to have high Young’s Modulus and low Poisson’s Ratio
