19 (a) Niels Bohr postulated that energy ∆E is released in the form of light when there is a
transition of electron between a higher energy level to a lower energy level.

(i) The Lyman and Balmer series in the atomic emission spectrum of hydrogen are formed
when there is a transition of electrons between energy levels. Draw an energy level diagram
that shows the formation of these two series . [4]

(ii) One of the lines in the Lyman series have a wavelength of 121.6 nm. Calculate the
energy of this transition in joules [5]

20. (a) An organic acid , Z is a weak monoprotic acid. If the pH of a 0.10 mol dm-3 Z is 3.76
what is the value of Ka for Z ? [3]

(b) (i) Define buffer solution

(ii) Calculate the pH of the 1.0 dm3 of a buffer solution prepared by dissolving 1.0
mole of CH3COOH and 1.2 mole of CH3COONa in a sufficient amount of water.

(iii) Calculate the pH of the buffer solution in (ii) above when 0.1 mole of calcium
hydroxide , Ca(OH)2 is added to it (Ka CH3COOH= 1.8 x 10-5 M ) [6]

(c) The solubility product constant for PbCl2 is 1.60 x 10-5 . Calculate the solubility of
PbCl2 in :

(i) water at 250 C

(ii) 0.10 mol dm-3 Pb(NO3)2 at 250 C [6]
