FUN WITH A VENTRILOQUIST Have you ever watched a ventilloguist perform? ‘A ventriloquist is a person who can speak in such a way that his mouth does not seem to move at all, and his voice appears to be coming {rom somewhere else, You cannot tell that he is speaking unless you stand very near him and watch his mouth closely, In stage and television shows, most ventiloquists prefer to use a life-size doll to make their show more entertaining. The ventriloquists cleverly makes his doll move its mouth, head and hhands in a natural way. The doll appears to be taking part ina conversation, giving clever and funny answers tothe ventriloguist's questions. Actualy, it isthe ventriloquist who is speaking all the time bat, because he does not open his mouth, nobody can tell! The ventriloquist also disguises his voice by speaking in a lighter tone when he is pretending to be the doll. He uses his naturally deeper voice when he replies tothe dol ‘Ventriloguism is not an easy art to learn, and there are not many ventiloquists in the world. ‘The art was first practised in ancient Egypt and Greece. The word ventriloquist comes from two latin words that together mean stomach speaker. This was because people believed that the sounds a ventriloquist made did not come from his mouth but from his stomach, Some people believed that ventriloquists possessed unnatural powers which were given to them by the Devil himself. Therefore, they were considered evil and capable of doing harm to people. Inancient times many stories were told of miracles and mysteries in which a voice came from a tree, a stone or a statue. For example, there is a story about a rock in a river that was able to speak and scare robbers away from a temple full of treasure.
