A COMPARITIVE PHARMACEUTICO-ANALYTICAL

EVALUATION OF RASAKARPURA PREPARED WITH

TWO DIFFERENT METHODS.

1. INTRODUCTION
Ayurveda serves humanity by prolonging the life span, maintaining positive health
and indeed curing diseases. To achieve these goals, substances of different origin
after exposure to unique pharmaceutical processing, are used as medicine.

Ayurveda has interacted with various medical systems from time to time and this
interaction along with updated research has facilitated its growth.

Rasashastra holds supremacy among all branches of ayurveda .It states the
importance of herbo-mineral preparations emphasizing towards the chikitsa on
which all principle is laid down in acute condition leading in better and quicker
results.

Rasashastra mainly deals with various types of preparations, among them

Kupipakva, Pottali, Parpati, and Kharaliya rasayanas are considered to be very
potent in eliminating the deadful diseases. One such drug is Rasakarpura which is
used separately as well as an ingredient in preparing other formulations.

Rasakarpura is indicated to cure diseases like Phiranga (syphilis), Krimivisha

(worms), Vranasrava (discharge from wound), Pravahika (cholera), Twakroga
(skin diseases).
2.NEED FOR THE STUDY

The word Rasakarpura comprises ‘Rasa’ and ‘Karpura’. Rasa indicate Parada
and Karpura indicate a substance which is white in colour. Rasakarpura is a white
colored mercurial product prepared by Kupipakva method.

Rasakarpura possesses many different pharmaceutical methods, but to produce

standardized, reproducible clinically effective medicine in the preparation of
rasakarpura along with certain analytical methods helps to reveal out chemical
composition of a formulation with their concentration and also ensure safety
limits and accuracy of the drug.

In different classical text books such as Rasatharngini and Ayurveda prakasha

with same name “Rasakarpura” drug is being mentioned with different
pharmaceutical preparation with different ingredients and is indicated in
Phiranga (syphilis), Krimivisha (worms), Vranasrava (discharge from wound),
Pravahika (cholera), Twakroga (skin diseases). Which is similar in both textbooks.
Hence in current study a comparative pharmaceutico-analytical evaluation of
rasakarpura is attempted following two classical textbooks along with analytical
study in order to know and compare the difference in final product.
3.AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

 To know the difference in two method of preparation.

 To prepare Rasa Karpura as per Rasa tharangini and ayurveda prakasha.
 To subject them for physico chemical analysis.

4.MATERIALS AND METHODS

 Literary source - Literary data will be collected from classical Ayurveda

text, reputed journals and modern literature
 Material data – Raw material will be collected from the market after
considering the Grahyalakshanas as mentioned in classical text. Herbal
material will be collected from their natural habitat and get authenticated by
the experts in the subjects of Rasashatra of JSS ayurveda medical college.
 Place of work- Pharmaceutical study at JSSAMC Mysore and Analytical
study at JSSAMC and JSS pharmacy college Mysore.

4.1 Method of collection of data

PHARMACEUTICAL STUDY

 Parada [Mercury-Hg] samanya shodhana.

Shodhana of Parada will be done by adding Nisha choorna and giving

bhavana with Kumari Swarasa and chakrikas are prepared and subjected to
Urdhwapathana
 Khatika [Chalk-CaCO3] shodhana.

Fine powder of Khatika churna is taken in a glass vessel and four times of
its quantity water is added to it. The mixture is stirred well for some time
and allowed to remain undisturbed for 3-4 hours. Decant the water
completely, and collect the material settled at the bottom. It is dried in
sunlight and shuddha Khatika is collected.
 Sphatika[K2SO4Al2(SO4)3 24H2O] (Alum)
Sphatika is done barjana until water propotion is evaporated

 Gairika[Fe2O3] (RedOxide)
Gaiiriika is fried with Go-grutha for sufficient time.

 Method of preparation of rasakarpura by rasatharangini method

First mix parada and ghandhakamla in petridish . Mandagni is given until its
water content evaporate or until it turns into a white powder form, this is
called as mercuric sulphate. Then saindhava lavana is mixed in equal
proportion , grind it well to make a homogenous mixture. It should be filled
in kachakupi, then keep kachakupi in valukayantra and give three stages of
agni for 3 yamakala(9 hours). After water vapours will disappear, seal the
mouth with cork and give intensive fire suddenly ,then stop giving agni and
after swanga sheeta collect rasakarpoora.
 Method of preparation of rasakarpura by Ayurveda prakasha method
All the ingredients mentioned in ayurveda prakasha are being powdered
and filtered through the cloth.Parada is done mardana for 1 yamakala. All
the ingredients are filled in the pot and covered with another pot of equal
mouth .Sandhibandhana is being done. Madhyama agni is given for 4
days. After swanga sheeta rasakarpura is collected.
