Located on the eastern edge of the Baltic Sea, Lithuania was founded in the 13th century,
and its native tongue is the closest living language to ancient Sanskrit. As the Russian
Empire collapsed in 1917, Germany invited Lithuania to join them in a new partnership.
Instead, on this day in 1918, the newly-formed Council of Lithuania chose autonomy.
Independence Day festivities are celebrated from the capital city Vilnius in the east, to the
