RESEARCH
Journalism and New Technology
My scholarship generally focuses on the intersection between journalism and new technology. I study journalism from both
the news production and news consumption side. These two are inextricably linked—while news audiences can be
influenced by news stories produced by journalists, journalists can also be influenced by the feedback that comes
from the audience. This is particularly salient in the age of web analytics and social media that allow quick and
instantaneous interaction between journalists and audiences.

News production News consumption

I study how the use of new technologies, such as social I also study how new technologies, such as social media and
media and web analytics, changes journalistic roles, web analytics, changes the ways audiences access and
routines and norms. These tools provide journalists easy process news and with what effects. Having studied news
access to audience data that report audience behavior and production processes extensively, I recognize the important
response to journalistic outputs. My focus is on news, but I role of the audience in journalism. Thus, I also study news
also test the theoretical frameworks I have developed in consumption patterns on social media, readers’ comments
specialized areas of journalism, including environmental to specific issues and to journalism, as well as the problem
journalism, health reporting, and sports journalism. of fake news and its impact on news credibility.

Synthesis
Studying both news production and consumption processes is important, especially in this period when news production is
no longer a monopoly of journalists. An increasing number of social media users now engage in journalistic acts,
sharing photos or videos of newsworthy events they witness first-hand; commenting on issues they consider
relevant; and publicly questioning journalistic accounts they are not satisfied with.
New technologies are changing the relationship between journalists and audiences, challenging traditional definitions of
who can be called a “journalist.” Both streams of my research, focusing on news production and consumption,
explore the ways journalism and new technologies intersect and with what results.
