SHORT INTRODUCTION OF THE THEORY

Palay or cereal grain is a staple food known in every part of the world, especially
in Asia. The way of planting of palay is unique and needs a massive effort. The palay was
planted in a watery soil, which is called rice paddy, that has a continuous flow of water to
make it muddy or watery and that makes unique to other plants. Planting palay needs a
lot of effort because farmers put the seeds on a separate field, then when the seed grows
like a grass it will transfer to another field and that field was arranged by a carabao or a
machine, that commonly farmers in the Philppines called it araro when using a carabao
and when using machine they called it kabota, also that field was fertilized, then they put
it in a row. Not just on the first step you will invest an effort when cultivating a rice but all
thru the process it needs a lot of sweat and time.

Palay theory talks about leadership. Leadership is an ability that in every leader in
a society needs, to group it together and motivates everyone towards its goals. According
to Pratima, Leadership is an important factor for making an organization successful.
Leadership is a substantial part of a society; we cannot form a community or a group if
there are no person who have the ability of leadership. Planting cereal grain (palay) is
one of the oldest ways of planting here on earth. The process of planting rice is relevantly
the same to the process or stages to become a better leader that will explain further to
this paper.

Basically, our group come up with this theory which we called Palay theory
because leadership is an ability that some of us lack, for the reason we cannot really
know its true meaning and how should a person initiate to become a leader. Palay theory
explains a process on how a leader should be form and how should a leader act.
II. DISCUSSION OF THE THEORY

The relevance of “Palay Theory”

Leadership is the action of leading a group of people or an organization. Successful
leaders can change the life we used to live in. According to Vince Lombardi, “Leaders are
made, they are not born”. Palay theory supposed to define leadership as a process. With
this theory, the group was able to connect the farming process to the stages that a
successful leader had been through. According to this theory, in order to obtain a good
leadership person must follow the procedure of rice farming. Being a leader was never
easy the same as planting rice.
Rice farming is a complex activity that requires a series of processes to achieve the
finished product.

The basic stages of cultivation include;

1.Find a Good Location at the Right Time

Prior to planning, we must consider a good location and crop calendar. Rice
plants are versatile, it requires full sunlight and sufficient water irrigation. Rice can
be grown in many different environments: either wetland or upland. There is also
the best date for planting rice. Crop calendar allows better planning of all form
activities and cost production.

2.Make a Good Foundation

Land preparation is important it makes the farmers ensure that the rice field
is ready for planting. It involves plowing, and harrowing to dig-up, mix and level the
soil. You must ensure that the soil is in its physical condition for crop growth and
the soil surface is level. Generally, it will take 3-4 weeks to prepare the field before
planting.

3.Implanting of Grains
Rice can be grown in two ways: Direct seeding and Transplanting
Direct Seeding- seeds are sown directly into the field. This is where
the farmers spread dry seed by hand or using a machine.
Transplanting- seedlings are first raised in seedbeds before they are
planted in the field.

4.Taking Good Care of the Crop

Taking additional care is a must for rice farming. For efficient and effective
rice planting the following practices can be done:

 Watering- cultivated rice is extremely sensitive to a water shortage.

 Fertilizing- applying nutrients to the crop is essential in managing soil
fertility so the plants grow and develop normally.
 Controlling weeds, pests, etc., - it is important to prevent losses in yield
and production cost and to preserve good grain quality.
5.Harvesting
It is a process of collecting the mature rice crop from the field. It consists of
the basic operations where can be done through cutting, stacking, handling,
threshing, cleaning, and hauling. It can be done through manual or mechanical
harvesting.

6.Milling
A process of removing the husk and bran layers, and produce edible, white
rice that is free of impurities.

7.Yielding
Rice farmers will not continue to produce rice if it is not profitable and if
options are available. Without our farmers, we don’t have anything to eat.

8.Satisfy the Needs

Rice is considered a staple food of over half the world’s population. It took
a lot a process before it is considered the one that sustains our needs. From being
the “Palay” (unhusked grains), the one that is being planted in the field. After being
planted, it will become a mature rice crop, commonly known as “Bigas” (husked
rice). After harvesting, the bigas will be available to become the “Kanin” (cooked
rice), the rice that sustains and provide a lot of health benefits.

The concept of Palay theory can mold every person to be a better leader. The
concept of the said theory was applicable not only to government officials, but it can also
be used as a model that will help everyone to change their mindset regarding being a
leader.
III. CORRELATION OF YOUR THEORY WITH A PARTICULAR EXAMPLE

On this part, we will relate the palay theory in the society which will result the improvement
or will solve certain issues within the society.

1. Find a Good Location at the Right Time- Good location at the right time is a vital
part of all. Without it, you will not able to perform everything. In finding a location,
you should consider the people on that place. For instance, is this place are
suitable to those people I will lead? or Is this place being proper for them to grow
effectively?

Example:

 Presidency
In most cases, you are voted as a president of this place such as in
Mindanao when in fact you are Roman, Catholic, and in reality most resident in
Mindanao are Muslims and the way of Catholic and Muslims are different when it
comes to their truth claims. That’s why you should consider a right place where to
lead for you to have a good way of leading such people.

 Poverty
Since poverty is the one of the problem in our country, this first procedure
will at least solve the poverty in a way of finding them a right place where to live,
putting them in a good place for them to grow, funding them in their needs and
such.

2. Make a good foundation- As a leader, you should have the foundation in

everything, the knowledge, skills, the rights and wrongs in leading people. In any
situation, you should know what you should act. In short, you have the blood in
leading such people.

Example:

 Unwanted Pregnancy
In this case, those women who are encountering unwanted pregnancy were
unready and do not have enough foundation of being a good mother to her
child/children. Not prepare, do not have enough knowledge and skills to overcome
when problems occur, and financially unstable. Therefore, to become a good
leader, you need to have a good foundation to avoid this kind of problem.
3. Implanting of Grains. This is the moment of starting to be a leader and implanting
knowledge to their subordinates to be one of the leaders too. Be a role model and
enhance people the way you know.

Example:

 Openness between Teacher and Student

Be a motivator to the students by being open and share your knowledge
and experience on a certain field that you are teaching. Make them comfortable
with you and make sure all the lessons you are sharing with them are accurate
and reliable for them to effectively apply those learnings.

4. Taking good care of the crop. Just like in planting palay, to be harvested in a
good way, you should take good care of it by using these things; water, fertilizer,
controlling weeds, pests, etc. In leadership, leaders of the society indeed taking
good care of their people for them to bloom, find their own purpose and spread
their wings in a good way.

Those things are representing as the knowledge, skills and, the essential needs
of a people to be a good one.

Example:

 Parent
In parent, they are taking good care of their children by giving so much
knowledge, enhancing their skills and giving their needs for them to grow intelligent
and have a good future.

5. Harvesting. This is the time when you combined all of them and let see if you did
great as a leader or you did not.

Example:

 Board Examination
This part is when all your professors gave to you their knowledge, skill, and needs
for you to be prepare on the day of examination and after that, the end result will reflect
to all your professors if they did great or not.

6. Milling. You will push away the unnecessary things that will burden people to be
a good leader, and a time to find their own purpose. All people have its purpose
even they grow differently as you expected. And, it is your duty to put them on their
right path.

Example:
 Trained Cadets
In army, some cadets are being trained into war and some are
assigned on intelligence where all tactics or strategies are coming
from them. They are both cadets but they were trained based on their
purpose.

7. Yielding. As a leader, producing young members to lead is a big help to our

country, for the youth to enlighten that we need to make a move. Without leaders,
we can’t do nothing for our country.

Example:
 Sangguniang Kabataan- an organization which all the kabataan will lead
and make move on their own society. Solving problem in the society,
leading their co-kabataan, and making their selves a role model.

8. Satisfy the needs. In this case, people grow and find their own purpose. Some
are being segregated to their group not because they are not the good ones, they
are being segregated because they have their own purpose in life. And, each of
us will find our purpose in the end and will realize we are not all the same. We
have our own skills that other people do not have, we have the capabilities that
they do not have and that is why we are not in the same situation like where they
are now because it is not our purpose in life.

Example:

 Entrepreneur- which focused in making products that will surely satisfy

the needs of people and not for the profit purposes which will lead in making
a bad move just to earn profit. Entrepreneurs have a good motive in
everything which is the reason why they are making such product is for the
costumer’s satisfactory.
IV. SYNTHESIS

There are numerous ways of defining leadership. Some of them try to explain what
differentiates a leader while other theories explain how great leaders come to be. Such
theories emphasize the characteristics of a leader while some explain the behavior that
a person can adopt to improve their abilities as a leader.

As we presented our detailed theory called “Palay Theory” proposes that good
leadership is a developed through a process. This theory about leadership is linked to a
process of rice farming. It defines that in order to obtain a good leadership it must follow
the procedure of a rice farming (from palay to rice). A good leader is capable to find a
right place to lead and once there is the right place a leader can make a good foundation
with the subordinates. To build a strong relationship with the members, a leader is
responsible to help and take care of them to effectively grow. As soon as the members
are fully grown, leaders can produce new leaders that will certainly help and shape any
kind of leadership that exist today and will able to somehow change the mindset of the
leaders in society.

The theory suggest that leadership is acquired through the process of palay to rice
that will eventually satisfy the society. The concept of this theory can be applied to
communities, companies, organizations, and even in academe to help one improve the
leadership skills because without a leader it’ll not produce great groups.
