Thank you very much for coming to tonight’s concert. I
am really excited to present this evening’s programme of
Maxine Richardson, Jo Wheatley
Early Music because it is a real passion of mine and I am Sarah Chadd, Ruth Charlesworth, Sarah
looking forward to introducing you to some different Ekins, Justyna Galkowska, Alice Haley
styles of music. Tonight’s programme is a mere glimpse at Sue Abrams, Charlotte Gernert, Sally
the music we know about, which is termed ‘Early Music’. Harrison, Sue Illingworth, Julia Knight

material for many of the pieces from the programme. The
music comes from a time when musical notation was only Peter Graper - Accompanist
just being developed. This presents many challenges for
the editor and performer. Whilst we can quite easily
decipher the intended pitch from these scores, rhythmic
inferences and ornamentation are much more open to
interpretation and early music performers aim to give
historically ‘informed’ not ‘accurate’ performances, as we
will never really know what it sounded like! I have also
included a few early instruments this evening, partly
because they were likely to have been used in
performances at the time, but also because I know people
find them fascinating to see and hear. I hope you enjoy
the concert. I would like to thank the church for kindly
allowing us to perform in their wonderful building.
