2)RETHINKING OF OFFICE SPACES:
INTRO:

Most commercial buildings in cities like Chennai, especially the smaller ones, look mundane
because the limited ground space doesn’t allow an aesthetic architectural design, or ends up
getting Aluminium Composite Panels (ACP) on its street-facing walls to get a sleek
appearance. But the problem is that such panelling traps heat into these buildings, which in turn,
brings about huge electricity bills for air conditioning. In a hot city like Chennai it is not suitable
,but unfortunately, this has become a trend

Typical Commercial office buildings are Highly energy consuming air conditioned boxes with
similar facades. Air-conditioning is important, but a trend of increased energy use with height
is also found in naturally ventilated buildings. Newer buildings are not in general more
efficient: the intensity of electricity use is greater in offices built in recent decades, without a
compensating decrease in fossil fuel use. The evidence suggests it is likely – although not
proven – that much of the increase in energy use with height is due to the greater exposure of
taller buildings to lower temperatures, stronger winds and more solar gains. The thesis focuses
on providing a solution for these issues.
AIM:
The thesis essence is rethinking work space through out the understanding of the current
typology and architectural solution to the office building, which is in most cases the air-
conditioned glass-box, and coming up with a more suitable solution that respects: Urban
Realm and Context, Technology,Sustainability and better Spatial Relationships for better work
experience.

 Analyse bioclimatic design principles for Medium storey buildings.
 Study existing standards and codes for Commercial buildings.
