Examine an organizational chart of a parish council describe and make deductions about
members and relationship within the corporation.
Describe the functions/services of the municipal corporation and draw conclusions about
its importance to governing of the country.
Gather information about how municipal corporation members are elected and discussed
the election process.

Day 1
Engage
Conduct offline research on the structures of the Municipal Corporation (Parish Council)
Explore/Explain
Work with a partner to look at the municipal corporation organisational charts, and
discuss and answer these questions:
1. Who is at the head of the Municipal Corporation (Parish Council)?
2. Who do all the department staff report to? Who is in charge of them?
3. What do you think is the relationship between the councillors and the Chief
Executive Officer?
4. Who do you think is the most important person in the chart after the mayor?
Elaborate
Investigate the structure of your own municipal corporation and draw your own
organization structures chart to show this. Visit (www.localgovjamaica.gov.jm).
Evaluate
Draw a diagram showing it structures. Diagram should include a simple description of the
role of each member of the council.
Activities (brought forward)
- Work in a group. Find pictures of the mayors of all the parishes, if possible in their
ceremonial robes. On a blank map of Jamaica, place each mayor’s picture or name in his
or her parish.
