EuroVans from 12.00 are equipped with

Immobilizer Generation III.

Generation III has the same functionality

as Generation II. However, in addition to
the normal data exchange between the
immobilizer control module and ignition
key, Gen. III includes data exchange
between the immobilizer control module
and Engine Control Module (ECM).

Data exchange between the Immobilizer

control module and ECM takes place
either over the "W"circuit or vehicle CAN-
Bus network (CAN-Bus method will be
implemented as a running change during
m.y. 2001 production). Confirmation of
data exchange method is visible using
Scan Tool function 08, Read measuring
value block, Display Group 001 page
01-24 .

If a baud rate value appears in display

field 1, data exchange is via the
"W"circuit. If the words "Data Bus" appear
in display field 1, data exchange is via the
vehicle CAN Bus network.

Immobilizer functions supported by:

a control module

an adapted Engine Control Module

(ECM)

an induction coil at ignition lock

adapted ignition keys with electronics

(transponder / response read
memory).

The control module for anti-theft

immobilizer -J362- is located behind the
instrument cluster and has On Board
Diagnostic capability.

)XQFWLRQ

Immobilizer III uses encrypted codes to

increase anti-theft protection.

With encrypted codes, the control module

for anti-theft immobilizer randomly
generates a number and transmits it to
the encryption transponder in the ignition
key.

Each transponder contains its own fixed

code. The transponder uses a specific
algorithm to calculate a new number
based on the transmitted number and the
fixed code.

This new number, the "encrypted code" is

sent back to the control module for anti-
theft immobilizer where it is backtracked
according to the same algorithm.

The backtracked number and the

original, randomly generated number
must match. The key is then recognized
as authorized.

Following recognition of the authorized

key, a variable code is transmitted to the
Engine Control Module (ECM).

The variable code is randomly re-

generated in the Engine Control Module
(ECM) after each engine start and is
stored in both control modules.

If the variable code in the control module

for anti-theft immobilizer and in the
Engine Control Module (ECM) match, the
engine can be started/ vehicle operated.

For troubleshooting, initiate On Board

Diagnostic (OBD) and read out stored
data using Scan Tool VAG 1551/1552 or
VAS 5051 Vehicle Diagnostic Testing
and Information System page 01-9 .

The instrument cluster contains an

electronic speedometer, tachometer,
liquid crystal (LCD) displays for
odometer, trip odometer/clock, as well as
analog coolant temperature and fuel level
gauges. Control and warning lamps are
situated within and between the
speedometer and tachometer, as well as
an LCD gear indicator display.
The instrument cluster is controlled by an
internal microprocessor with On Board
Diagnostic (OBD) capability. If
malfunctions occur in monitored sensors
and components, Diagnostic Trouble
Codes (DTC) will be stored in memory
together with an indication of malfunction
type. A maximum of 4 DTCs can be
stored simultaneously.

Sporadic malfunctions (indicated in the

readout by "SP") are automatically
cancelled if not repeated in the next 50
engine start cycles.

Before performing any troubleshooting or

inspection, always begin by checking for
DTCs using the OBD program. DTCs
stored in memory are retrieved/checked
with either the VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool
(ST) or VAS 5051 Vehicle Diagnostic,
Testing and Information System.

For OBD purposes, the instrument

cluster counts one start cycle whenever
the ignition is switched on longer than 5
min. and a minimum speed of 30 km/h
(18.5 mp/h ) is exceeded.

As a running change during m.y. 2001,

instrument clusters are integrated into the
vehicle CAN Data Bus network (may also
be know as "CAN-Bus" or "Data-Bus").
Specific procedures apply page 01-112
.

Do not disassemble instrument

cluster.
The instrument cluster is not field
serviceable. All malfunctions require
replacement of instrument cluster.

When the replacement of a

malfunctioning instrument cluster is
necessary, follow exchange part
procedures.

Complete the report form and return

together with instrument cluster.

Use the original packaging from the

new cluster when returning modules.

Replacement instrument clusters must

be first be coded according to vehicle
market version and equipment level
variables using VAG 1551 Scan Tool
(ST) page 01-79 .

Odometer reading must also be

adapted to the replacement instrument
cluster page 01-93 .

As a running change during m.y. 2001,

instrument clusters are integrated into the
vehicle CAN Data Bus network (may also
be know as "CAN-Bus" or "Data-Bus").

The CAN-Bus On Board Diagnostic

(OBD) interface -J533- (which is
integrated into the instrument cluster)
enables data to be exchanged between
the vehicle CAN-Bus network and the
Data Link Connector (DLC) "K-wire".

The CAN-Bus On Board Diagnostic

(OBD) interface -J533- has specific On
Board Diagnostic (OBD) capabilities via
address word 19 "Gateway", and must
always be coded separately page 01-
177 .

*HQHUDOLQIRUPDWLRQ

The instrument cluster contains an

electronic speedometer, tachometer,
liquid crystal (LCD) displays for
odometer, trip odometer/clock, as well as
analog coolant temperature and fuel level
gauges. Control and warning lamps are
situated within and between the
speedometer and tachometer, as well as
an LCD gear indicator display.

The instrument cluster is controlled by an

internal microprocessor with On Board
Diagnostic (OBD) capability. If
malfunctions occur in monitored sensors
and components, Diagnostic Trouble
Codes (DTC) will be stored in memory
together with an indication of malfunction
type. A maximum of 4 DTCs can be
stored simultaneously.

Sporadic malfunctions (indicated in the

readout by "SP") are automatically
cancelled if not repeated in the next 50
engine start cycles.

Before performing any troubleshooting or

inspection, always begin by checking for
DTCs using the OBD program. DTCs
stored in memory are retrieved/checked
with either the VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool
(ST) or VAS 5051 Vehicle Diagnostic,
Testing and Information System.

For OBD purposes, the instrument

cluster counts one start cycle whenever
the ignition is switched on longer than 5
min. and a minimum speed of 30 km/h
(18.5 mp/h ) is exceeded.

1RWHVRQH[FKDQJLQJLQVWUXPHQW
FOXVWHU

Do not disassemble instrument

cluster.

The instrument cluster is not field

serviceable. All malfunctions require
replacement of instrument cluster.
When the replacement of a
malfunctioning instrument cluster is
necessary, follow exchange part
procedures.

Complete the report form and return

together with instrument cluster.

Use the original packaging from the

new cluster when returning modules.

Replacement instrument clusters must

be first be coded according to vehicle
market version and equipment level
variables using VAG 1551 Scan Tool
(ST) page 01-143 .

The CAN-Bus On Board Diagnostic

(OBD) interface -J533- must also be
coded coded after instrument cluster
replacement page 01-177 .

Odometer reading must also be

adapted to the replacement instrument
cluster page 01-159 .

As a running change during m.y. 2001,

instrument clusters are integrated into the
vehicle CAN Data Bus network (may also
be know as "CAN-Bus" or "Data-Bus").

The CAN-Bus On Board Diagnostic

(OBD) interface -J533- (which is
integrated into the instrument cluster)
enables data to be exchanged between
the vehicle CAN-Bus network and the
Data Link Connector (DLC) "K-wire".

The CAN-Bus On Board Diagnostic

(OBD) interface -J533- has specific On
Board Diagnostic (OBD) capabilities via
address word 19 "Gateway", and must
always be coded separately from the
instrument cluster page 01-193 .
