This chapter contains an introduction to the principle of the minimum potential
energy. For understanding the physical meaning of this variational method, its
implementation on one-dimensional elements is presented and the
corresponding procedures for finite element modeling of spring and bar
elements, as well as of trusses and beams, are provided. For this purpose,
the stationary potential energy of the structural system, shape functions of
deformed elements, and symbolic mathematics are used to develop the
element stiffness matrices.

Combined structures-controls optimization of lattice trusses

January 1992 · Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering

A. V. Balakrishnan

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate concretely the role that distributed parameter models can play in CSI, in particular in combined
structures-controls optimization problems of importance in preliminary design. Closed form solutions can be obtained for performance criteria
such as rms attitude error, making possible analytical solutions of the optimization problem. This in contrast to ... [Show full abstract]

Effects of Introducing Dynamic Constraints for Buckling to Truss Sizing Optimization Problems
January 2018 · FME Transactions

Nenad Petrovic · Nenad Marjanovic · Nenad Kostic · [...] · Sanjin Troha

In this paper the effects of adding buckling constraints to truss sizing optimization for minimizing mass are investigated. Introduction of
buckling testing increases the complexity of the optimization process as Euler buckling criteria changes with each iteration of the optimization
process due to the changes in element cross section dimensions. The resulting models which consider this criteria ... [Show full abstract]

Continuum Models for Beam- and Platelike Lattice Structures

December 1978 · AIAA Journal
Ahmed K. Noor · Melvin S. Anderson · William H. Greene

. A general procedure for determining beam and plate properties for beam- and platelike lattice structures is presented. In the literature
several methods for the calculation of the equivalent stiffnesses of lattice structures exist. In this document an energy approach is used to
derive explicit expressions for the equivalent stiffnesses of the most common types of plane trusses. Plane trusses ... [Show full abstract]

Active vibration control of a trussed structure based on the physical reduced model
December 2013
Haijun Peng · Wensheng Wang · G. D. Cheng

In order to solve the vibration suppression problem of a large flexible trussed structure, the large scale of finite element model is firstly
transformed into a reduced model based on the physical reduced method of deformation modification. Then, a LQG optimal control law is
designed based on the reduced model, and the closed-loop system simulation is implemented under the initial impulse force. ... [Show full

An Event-to-Event Strategy for Nonlinear Analysis of Truss Structures. I

April 1992 · Journal of Structural Engineering
Karamchandani, A., Sr · C. Allin Cornell

An efficient strategy to obtain static nonlinear response is presented. It is applicable to trusses made up of elements with piecewise linear
force-deformation characteristics and subject to proportional loads or piecewise linear load paths. The strategy uses the fact that the
response is piecewise linear; it only computes response at the ends of the linear segments and obtains intermediate ... [Show full abstract]

Reza Ansari · J. Torabi · Mostafa Faghih Shojaei · E. Hasrati

Buckling analysis of axially-compressed functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) conical panels is presented
employing the variational differential quadrature (VDQ) method. The material properties of nanocomposite conical panel are assumed to be
graded along the thickness direction and are estimated through the micromechanical model. To present the energy functional of ... [Show full

A theory of continua with projective microstructure as a model for large trusses

October 1978 · Journal of Engineering Mathematics
Ken-Ichi Kanatani

A large truss is approximated by a continuum admitting projective transformations as microscopic deformations. A suitable set of parameters
describing the microscopic deformation is extracted, and its spatial compatibility is investigated. Equations of equilibrium are derived by
means of a variational principle. They define a special class of materials of grade 2. A complete solution is expressed ... [Show full abstract]

Design of frames against buckling using a Rayleigh Quotient Approximation

June 1993 · AIAA Journal
Robert Canfield

A Rayleigh quotient approximation is applied to the design of structures while guarding against elastic instability. It approximates buckling
eigenvalues by separately estimating the modal strain energy due to the linear and geometric stiffness of the structure. Previously used
during structural optimization for the fundamental natural eigenvalue, the Rayleigh quotient approximation is derived ... [Show full abstract]

Geometric stiffness of membranes using symbolic algebra

May 2004 · Engineering Structures
R. Levy · Chuin-Shan Chen · Cheng-Wei Lin · Y.B. Yang

This paper is concerned with derivation of the geometric stiffness matrix for membrane shells which are represented by constant stress
triangular finite elements. Symbolic algebra is used to calculate the gradient of the member nodal force vector of each element when the
stresses are kept fixed. This gradient defines the geometric stiffness matrix of the element in global coordinates. The present ... [Show full

Instability analysis of space trusses using exact tangent-stiffness matrices

December 1985 · Finite Elements in Analysis and Design

K. Tanaka · Kazuo KONDOH · S. N. Atluri

A simple (exact) expression for the tangent-stiffness matrix of a space truss undergoing arbitrarily large deformation, as well as member
buckling, is given. An arc-length method is used to solve the tangent-stiffness equations in the post-buckling range of the structural
deformation. Several examples to illustrate the viability of the present approaches in analyzing large space structures, ... [Show full abstract]

January 2016
B. Audoly

We introduce the equations governing the equilibrium of slender elastic structures, i.e. quasi-one-dimensional elastic bodies whose extent in
one direction is much larger than in the two perpendicular (cross-sectional) directions. This chapter could serve as an introduction to the
elasticity of deformable bodies. We start by deriving one-dimensional models governing slender structures in two ... [Show full abstract]

Z.H. Zhang · X.P. Shu · Mei Li He

During the analysis of complex structure including steel truss, the equivalent continuous model of steel truss is usually adopted for its high
computational efficiency. The equivalent method commonly used is the equal deformation method and equal flexural rigidity method. Based
on the consideration of equal height and equal strain energy, a equivalent solid-web method is put forward in this ... [Show full abstract]
