 Enthalpy (H) is the total energy in the system Notes.

 Entropy (S) Apparatus and Material for Entropy
 explain the entropy changes that occur: Practical.
 (i) during a change in state e.g. (s) → (I); (I) → (g); (s) → (aq) Worksheets.
 (ii) during a temperature change
 (iii) during a reaction in which there is a change in the number of gaseous
molecules.(they will make observations from the entropy laboratory activity)
 a) define standard Gibbs free energy change of reaction by means of the
equation ΔG ⦵ = ΔH ⦵ – TΔS ⦵

 b) calculate ΔG ⦵for a reaction using the equation ΔG⦵ = ΔH ⦵ – TΔS ⦵
 c) state whether a reaction or process will be spontaneous by using the sign of
ΔG⦵
 d) predict the effect of temperature change on the spontaneity of a reaction,
given standard enthalpy and entropy changes.
ACTIVITY AND OR ACTIVE LEARNING
I will start by telling my learners what expected outcomes are for the lesson or activity we are doing.
 I will introduce the lesson by defining entropy,Gibbs free energy
 Discussion on how entropy affects a chemical reaction.
 After the discussion, students will get into groups to discuss the changes in entropy and how they think it will affect
the reaction, reaction rate, and energy in a system.
 Notes on a projector covering the terminology and other aspects of the topic.
 Questions on entropy and energy changes as the presentation progresses and how these might affect chemical
reactions.
 Worksheets as attached to this lesson plan.

HOW DO YOU PLAN TO CHALLENGE THE MORE ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING (AfL)
ABLE LEARNERS?
 Provide more challenging questions.  Formative assessment

gradually increasing in demand up until Oral feedback will be done at the end of the lesson highlighting
we reach the more demanding PPQs. where the students need to improve in answering questions as
per the expectations of examiners.

SELF ASSESSMENT AND MODIFICATION: the laboratory experiment can be done as a demonstration for the students instead
of having them perform it themselves as it is time consuming.

Entropy Worksheet 1
Entropy (symbol S) is a measure of the disorderof a system.

If a system becomes more disordered, the value of ∆S is positive.

Entropy increase when

• solids melt
• liquids boil
• solids dissolve in water
• the number of gas molecules increases
• the temperature increases
