(a) When the explorer, Hiram Bingham III came upon Machu Picchu in 1911, he
was looking for a different city, known as Vilcabamba to which the Incas had
escaped after the Spanish arrived in 1532.

No, the city of Vilcabamba and Machu Picchu are not the same.

(a) Describe the town of Machu Picchu.


Machu Picchu site is divided into an upper town area where royalty lived
and temples were built. The lower town was an agricultural area that
included workers’ quarters and warehouses. It had terraced farming with
a water supply system for irrigation.
(b) What can the windmill see from the top of the tower?
The windmill can see field of maize, wheat and rye from the top of the
tower. It can see the harvest heaped in the fields ready to be threshed and
to be brought for grinding.

4. Answer the following questions in about 80 – 100 words.

(a) Write a short note on the New Seven wonders of the world.
The New Seven wonders of the world is an initiative started in 2001 to
revive the concept of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world and to
choose another set of wonders of the world from a selection of 200
existing monuments. The popularity poll was led by Canadian Swiss
Bernard Weber and organized by the New Seven Wonders Foundation
based in Zurich, Switzerland. The seven winners were announced on July
7, 2007 with the aim to represent global heritage. Each of the new seven
wonders of the world is a masterpiece. They are the realization of some
great dreams, the display of some great skills and great labour.
(b) Write a summary of the poem, ‘The Windmill’?
In the poem ‘The Windmill’, the windmill speaks about its daily routine
and how it helps the miller earn his living. It stands on a solid rock
between fields of maize, wheat and rye which it will devour to grind it
into fine flour. It waits for the harvest from the field to be fed into it. It
hears the flails made by threshing of the harvest. The wind that meets the
sails of the windmill makes a loud roar. But the windmill stands
undeterred ready to take whatever that comes to it for grinding. It is like
a brave soldier who is ready to perform his duties at any cost. It takes
pride because his master is being benefitted by his deeds. Lastly the
windmill says that it rests on Sunday and listens to the church bells ring.
