Chapter 1

1.0 Background of the Study

The researcher has chosen this topic as this topic is not widely seen in the Philippines.

The researcher has mostly seen research about this topic on different locations such as

USA and Europe. This was the observation of the researcher.

The researcher suggests that this study should be used more as Facebook is being

rampant among the elderly. This was also one of the researcher’s observation. This study

could help students, families, and other elderly.

1.1 Introduction

In today’s generation, Social Media is growing every day. People of all ages and

genders use it. In January this year alone, there were already 3.484 billion users globally

(Hootsuite, 2019). According to the Global Digital Report of 2019, Facebook is the most

famous and have the most active users followed by YouTube and WhatsApp. In the

Philippines alone, Facebook Messenger is the most used and social media platform. Only

6% of people aged 55-64 years old use Facebook globally. 3% of them are females while

the other 3% are males.

In the Philippines, there are 76 million active social media users. “Facebook.com”

is the most searched word in the internet with 423,300,000 monthly traffic, 15

minutes and 15 seconds as the average time visited, and 18.5 pages per visit. The two

that followed was “Google.com” and “Google.com.ph”. 97% of internet users use the

Facebook followed by YouTube and Facebook Messenger. There are 75 million active

7|Page
users of Facebook and 3.3% of those users are aged 55 to 64 years old. 2% of those are

females while the remaining 1.3% are males.

The importance of this study is to educate all the people that wants to know the

effects of the use of the famous social platform “Facebook” to the elderly. This could help

people understand the elderly who uses Facebook, why they act the way they act, and

how it affects both the elderly and the person.

In the Philippines, there is little to no study of this research. This study could be

the first study in the Philippines that focus on the correlation of Facebook and the elderly.

In this study, the researcher will mainly focus on the elderly and how the use of

Facebook affects them. The researcher will identify if the positive effects will outweigh the

negative effects or vice versa.

1.2 Significance of the study

Facebook helps us communicate with friends, family members, loved ones, etc. It

gives people the freedom to post and share contents made by the person or other people.

This study could help lots of people. It will help them to understand why the elderly who

uses Facebook act the way they do.

Students – This study could help students in making their research papers or thesis. This

will also help them understand the elderly who uses Facebook and why they act that way.

This will also help them widen their knowledge on what they already know.

8|Page
Family Members – This will help them understand their family members who are

considered an elderly on why they use Facebook and how it affects them. This will also

help them widen their knowledge on what they already know.

Government Agencies – This will help them understand the elderly in the Philippines

who uses Facebook better. They can make a study about this and that would benefit

students and people alike as both of them could have a reputable source of information.

Netizens – This will become new found knowledge for netizens who are interested in this

study. They will understand the elderly who uses Facebook better and why they act the

way they do.

1.3 Statement of the Problem

This study focuses on how Facebook affects our elderly in terms of:

1. Emotion – To know what the elderly is feeling.

2. Time – Management – To know if the elderly is addicted to using Facebook.

3. Self-esteem – To know if the use of Facebook affects their self-esteem

By working on this study, the researcher will ask these questions:

1. How do you feel when using Facebook? Happy, sad, embarrassed, etc.?

2. How long do you use the Facebook in a day?

3. When do you use Facebook?

4. How do you use Facebook?

1.4 Theoretical Framework

9|Page
1.4.1 Goffman’s Theory

According to Goffman, social interaction may be likened to a theater, and people

in everyday life to actors on a stage, each playing a variety of roles (Crossman, 2019).

People who uses social media such as Facebook has a role to play. In Goffman’s theory,

it also states that people who interact with other people will constantly engage in the

process known as “Impression Management” wherein one tries to present themselves

and behave in a way wherein they will not be an embarrassment to themselves and to

others around him or her.

There is a thing called “actor’s front” as labeled by Goffman. This is the part of an

individual wherein he or she shows an image or impression to the audience. By doing

this, the person is not known as the person itself but by the thing he or she wants to be

perceived by the audience. This happens in social media platforms wherein people show

other people on how they want to be perceived by them.

1.4.2 Game Theory

The focus of game theory is the game, which serves as a model of an interactive

situation among rational players. The key to game theory is that one player's payoff is

contingent on the strategy implemented by the other player. The game identifies the

players' identities, preferences, and available strategies and how these strategies affect

the outcome. Depending on the model, various other requirements or assumptions may

be necessary (Hayes, 2019).

In using Facebook, people are unaware that they are using the Game Theory by

John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern. People will mostly want to have a good

10 | P a g e
impact in social media. They are unaware that they are thinking of the best move possible

to do in social media to avoid getting bashed by netizens.

1.6 Hypothesis of the Study

This study will greatly improve the knowledge of people interested on why the

elderly who uses the social media platform, Facebook, acts the way they act and feel the

way they feel.

This study aims to see the outcome on why elders use Facebook. This study aims

to find the effects, advantages, and disadvantages of elders using the said social media

platform.

1.7 Scope and Delimitations

In general, the focus of this study is directed towards the effects of the use of

Facebook by the elderly. There will be 20 respondents wherein all of them are citizens of

11 | P a g e
the Philippines and is considered an elder as per the law. The study is largely dependent

on the honesty, sincerity, and integrity of the respondents.

1.8 Definition of Terms

1. Facebook - is a popular free social networking website that allows registered users

to create profiles, upload photos and video, send messages and keep in touch with

friends, family and colleagues (Rouse, 2014).

2. Elderly – According to the Republic Act No. 9257 otherwise known as the

Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2003 Section 2a defines that an “elderly” or

“Senior Citizen” is a resident of the Philippines and is at least sixty (60) years old.

3. Social Media – According to Rouse (2019), Social media is the collective of online

communications channels dedicated to community-based input, interaction,

content-sharing and collaboration. Websites and applications dedicated to forums,

microblogging, social networking, social bookmarking, social curation, and wikis

are among the different types of social media.

4. YouTube - is a popular video sharing website where registered users can upload

and share videos with anyone able to access the site. These videos can also be

embedded and shared on other sites.

5. WhatsApp - is one of the most popular call and chat apps available and is featured

among Digital Trends’ top chat clients and best messaging apps. WhatsApp

combines ease of use with sought-after services like end-to-end encryption, free

internet-based international calling, cross-platform compatibility, wide global

reach, and even a desktop version (Dove, 2019).

12 | P a g e
6. Facebook Messenger - is a free mobile messaging app used for instant

messaging, sharing photos, videos, audio recordings and for group chats. The app,

which is free to download, can be used to communicate with your friends on

Facebook and with your phone contacts.

7. Bashing – is the term when people in the internet belittle another person by saying

words that can hurt one’s ego or feelings.

8. Netizen – According to Cambridge Dictionary, a netizen is a person who uses the

internet.

Chapter 2

2.0 Foreign and Literature Studies

In future decades, several countries will experience a surge in the older-adult

population, a phenomenon known as an ageing society (UN World Population Ageing

Report 2013). Today, people live longer, have fewer children, delay their retirement, and

rely more on themselves for personal health management (OECD 2008). Increasingly,

information and communication technology (ICT) are recognized as important tools to

improve senior citizens’ lives. For example, they may browse the web for healthcare

information, make payments on their mobile phones without leaving their house, and

connect with friends and family members who live in dispersed locations (Burke et al.

2010; Foverskov and Binder 2011; Pilotto et al. 2011). Several ICT innovations have been

used to promote better quality of learning and to increase participation in lifelong learning

for senior citizens (ICT for Senior and Intergeneration Learning Report 2011). Also, many

online videogames have been designed for them to improve their physical well-being and

maintain their cognitive abilities (Whitlock et al. 2012).

There is growing empirical evidence that ICT innovations improve senior citizens’

domain life satisfaction (Oh et al. 2014). Senior citizens can use ICT particularly the

Internet as a platform to enhance social capital, stimulate political participation, civic

engagement and community governance (Jennings and Zeitner 2003; Kavanaugh and

Patterson 2001; Sum et al. 2008; Wellman et al. 2001). Internet and social media

applications allow seniors to stay in touch with family, reconnect with old friends, and

14 | P a g e
connect with others around hobbies and interests (Smith 2011; Zickuhr and Madden

2012).

Previous research has assessed senior citizen’s use of ICT in relation to their

subjective well-being and life satisfaction in different life domains (Champeau 2008; Leist

2013; Mathews 2013). However, little research has been done to further expand the use

of emergent ICT applications such as social media and its impact on senior citizens and

their satisfaction with life. In recent years, social media has significantly changed the way

people communicate, interact, and socialize with one another. People of all ages use

social media across various life activities. According to the Pew Internet Report on Older

Adults and Technology use, older adults, despite being late adopters, are among the

fastest growing groups to use social media. In 2013, more than 43% of senior citizens in

the U.S. used at least one type of social media, compared to 26% in 2010 and 1% in 2008

(Pew Research Center 2014). However, senior citizen lifestyles are generally different

from the lifestyles of younger age groups, thus their use of social media could yield

different outlooks from that of the younger population (Oksman 2005). Building on our

previous research design (Ractham and Kaewkittipong 2013), this one aims to theorize

how senior citizens use social media and the implications for their satisfaction with life in

general.

Our two research questions are:

1) How do senior citizens use social media to support everyday activities?

2) What is the influence of social media use on senior citizens’ life

satisfaction?

15 | P a g e
Since social media applications are malleable and people can use them to suit

their needs, it is not possible to theorize social media use a priori. Therefore, we first

inductively theorize how senior citizens use social media applications in various life

domains through focus group interviews followed by a survey to empirically evaluate the

impact of social media use on life satisfaction using Partial Least Squares Structural

Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). Next, we discuss theory development followed by a

research framework. The methodology and analysis section outlines the two-phase

research design. The results section presents the findings from focus group interviews

and the survey. We conclude the paper with contributions, future research and limitations.

Chapter 3

Methodology

3.0 Introduction

The purpose of this chapter is to present the philosophical assumptions

underpinning this research, as well as to introduce the research strategy and the empirical

techniques applied. The chapter situates the research amongst existing research

traditions in information systems.

The researcher gave out survey forms as the way to get the data needed to further

conduct this study. This was the best method as per the researcher as this was the

method that the researcher could think of as the researcher thought that this was the best

method possible for getting data from the elderlies.

The researcher gave out survey forms to people with known associates of elderly

using Facebook. This would widen the possibilities of additional knowledge as the

elderlies who participated was all around from Metro Manila. This would see if elderly

from different places is a factor contributing to the effect of Facebook on them.

3.1 Research Approach

The research approach that was followed for the purposes of this research was

the constructivist approach. Constructivism is a theory of learning that centers on the

individual’s construction of meaning and understanding of the world through social

processes (Stabile & Ershler, 2016).

3.2 The Case Study Strategy

17 | P a g e
In this research, the researcher used both quantitative and qualitative approaches

to conduct this study. The researcher used both methods as this would get better results

and make it easier for the researcher to analyze the data gathered. The researcher used

“Sequencing” specifically for this study. Sequencing is one way to combine both

qualitative and quantitative data by alternating between them. Sequencing relies on both

the validity of quantitative and qualitative data collection options and times the use of

each type of tool so that information gathered informs the development of the next set of

tools and the overall progress of this research (BetterEval, 2014)

3.3 Instrumentation

In conducting this study, the researcher used instruments, such as questionnaires

that are based on three factors which are emotion, time – management, and self –

esteem. The instruments used were:

1. A survey form for respondents to answer on

2. A consent form to protect the identities of the participants

3.4 Data Source

In conducting this study, questions relevant to this study were asked. The survey

paper contains nine (9) questions. Additional questions were asked such as gender and

occupation, equvialenting to eleven (11) questions all in all, to see if there’s a correlation

between these two (2) and how elders use Facebook and how it affects them.

Summary, Conclusion, and Recommendations

Introduction

In this study, the researcher hypothesizes that the use of Facebook by the elderly

will affect them in a positive way. This study will help current and future researchers to

use this paper as a guide and reference when making a similar research about this topic.

This paper will not only help researchers but all people who are interested in this topic.

Summary of the Study

This paper is all about the elderly and how Facebook affects them. Facebook is

one of the most famous social media platforms in the planet. Facebook ranks 1 st when it

comes to social media platforms. WhatsApp and YouTube comes next. It is found in this

study that there are indeed factors that affect the elderly when it comes to using

Facebook.

Conclusion

In conclusion, after the researcher carefully examined the data gathered, it can be

said that Facebook has a positive effect to the elderly when it comes to using the

application. The researcher also concludes that there is no correlation when it comes to

occupation, gender, place where the participants live, etc. and how elders use Facebook.

It has been relevant that the elderlies use Facebook to mainly communicate with friends

and loved ones and will continue to use Facebook because of its friendly interface and

easy navigation. The researcher also concludes that they will also continue to use

25 | P a g e
Facebook because of their satisfaction when using the application. It also helps them with

other things like business and online shopping. Facebook can be seen as an application

that does not only exist to talk to other people but can also help people with lots of other

things like getting updated on the news, playing games, read blogs, watch vlogs, and a

lot more.

Recommendations

The researcher recommends a similar or same study to be conducted in a much

larger scale so that the data gathered would be much more accurate as this study’s scope

was only in Metro Manila and that there were only 20 respondents, not enough for the

researcher to make the most accurate conclusion. The researcher recommends that

when conducting the same or similar research, the respondents must be from a region

like NCR, Region 1, Region 2, etc. as to compare the accuracy of this study to the one

that other researchers would or would not conduct. The researcher also recommends to

use this paper in referencing similar works.
