III.Presentation

Now, enjoy reading the following story of a couple who planned to

spend their summer holiday in a certain place but did not pursue because
of an incident.

Going Going Gone!

Andrew and Daisy Marvell were going to spend another holiday in Majorca. Everyone
knew that — the postman knew it, the dustman knew it and their next door neighbors also knew
they would be going there. The simple reason was that they had been going there for their
summer holiday for the last twenty-five years. Most people in Britain are subjected to an endless
bombardment of advertisements on television just after Christmas inviting them to book for their
summer holiday. The adverts are constantly telling viewers that if they book early, they will save
enormous amounts of money but at the same time there is a little voice at the back of peoples'
minds that is suggesting to them that there will also be bargains if they wait until the last minute.
Habit is a significant factor in all this. You did this last year while you were taking down the
Christmas decorations and therefore without realizing it, you will be doing exactly the same this
year. You sit back in your favorite armchair and say: six months' time I shall be sitting on a sunny
beach somewhere and I shall be reading my favorite book.
The Marvells did not believe in leaving things to chance. They believed in planning. On a
winter evening around mid-January in the Marvell household the following would be a typical
conversation: "Are you thinking, what I'm thinking Daisy?" — "I'll tell you what I'm thinking:
I'm dreaming of my summer holiday at the moment in a lovely warm place, And." She was being
very romantic when she called him "And". "And, And (this was Daisy's sense of humor) where
will you be taking your holiday this summer?" — "I was thinking perhaps we might try Majorca,
it's said to be very pretty." At this stage of the conversation there would be the sound of screams
of laughter and the following day Andrew usually booked the holiday. The next-door neighbors,
the long-suffering Nortons, heard the laughter too, turned to each other and said: "They're
obviously making arrangements to go to Majorca again."
When Andrew finished work that Monday and was walking down the high street to the
station to get his train home, he decided to call in at the travel agents to make his booking. When
he reached the door, it didn't seem to open in the usual manner. In fact to his surprise it opened
outwards instead of inwards. He ought to know, he thought, he'd been pushing and not pulling it
several times a year over the last twenty-five and he usually went to young Jack (now old Jack)
who'd been working there over the same period of time. The layout was different, too. Something
strange was happening and poor Andrew couldn't make it out. There was the smell of damp and
hot hair. "Can I help you, sir?" asked a young woman in a white overall. — "I've been coming
here for the last twenty ..." Andrew's jaw dropped. For a moment he thought he was standing in
the wrong shop, dashed outside and then came back in again. Maybe he was dreaming but then it
dawned on him, the travel agents had gone and been replaced by a hairdressers. The woman
explained: "We opened last week and are opening another new premises by the park next month.
The travel agents have been experiencing a difficult time this year. They weren't getting their
regular customers." Andrew just couldn't handle it. If Daisy were here, she would be feeling the
same. He tried to picture how he would be explaining it to her. What would she be doing right
now at home? She would probably be preparing the supper and expecting to see the receipt for
the booking as he came through the door. What could he do? He was in a hairdressing salon and
it was a uni-sex one as well! He didn't know what to do, where to look.
When Andrew eventually reached home about two hours later, Daisy was speaking on the
phone. She had been going frantic trying to find out what had happened to Andrew. As she was
watching him come through the door, she couldn't believe it was him. He looked about 20 years
younger. Apparently he had been persuaded to stay on at the salon and have his hair done. He
had seriously been considering having something done for some time and the young woman in
the white overall had convinced him that he should experience all the facilities on offer. It wasn't
long after that when Daisy gave the salon a try, too. Within three months Andrew and Daisy had
become very important customers. It wasn't cheap of course but both their heads were
immaculate and they were enjoying the appreciative comments from friends and colleagues
including of course the postman, the dustman and the next door neighbors. Normally at this time
of year they would have been saving hard and putting money aside for the holiday in Majorca
but that topic was not being discussed at the moment. As the weeks went by they both became
very friendly with the young woman in white called Angela and on one of their regular visits she
told them:"I'm running a raffle to mark our first 100 days at the salon that's how long we'll have
been doing business by the end of this week and I was wondering whether you would like to buy
some tickets." Anxious to keep in favor they paid up, bought six tickets and thought no more
about it. About a month later when they arrived at the salon, Angela was waiting for them at the
door excitedly waving an envelope. "They've just been doing the draw and you've won first
prize." As Daisy was casually opening the envelope she half expected to have won a set of
hairbrushes or a bottle of champagne. As she read the note, a strange smile was beginning to
cross her face. "We're going on holiday And!" — "Oh, yes that's nice dear and where are we
going?" — "Somewhere called Majorca, dear." — "Ah well, said And that'll keep the postman,
the dustman and the neighbors happy."

IV. Discussion

How do you find the story? Do you think the couple had regrets of not
continuing their trip? Why? Why not? How did the lives of the couple change
when the parlor was put up? If you were the wife or the husband, would you go
to the same place? If not, what place do you like to spend your summer
holiday?

Read the following sentences. Notice the verbs in italics.

1. Andrew and Daisy Marvell were going to spend another holiday in Majorca.

2. Everyone knew that — the postman knew it, the dustman knew it and their next door
neighbors also knew they would be going there.

3. The simple reason was that they had been going there for their summer holiday for
the last twenty-five years.

4. I'm running a raffle to mark our first 100 days at the salon that's how long we'll have
been doing business by the end of this week and I was wondering whether you would
like to buy some tickets.

5. The travel agents have been experiencing a difficult time this year.

6. They weren't getting their regular customers." Andrew just couldn't handle it.

7. If Daisy were here, she would be feeling the same.

8. He tried to picture how he would be explaining it to her.

9. What would she be doing right now at home?

10. She would probably be preparing the supper and expecting to see the receipt for the
booking as he came through the door.

What do you observe with the verbs used in the sentences above? Do they follow a
similar pattern?
Grammar Notes…

The progressive tenses, which indicate something being or happening, are formed with
the present participle form (ending in -ing) along with various auxiliaries. "She is driving. She
was driving. She will be driving. She has been driving. She had been driving. She will have been
driving."

We use the progressive from when:

we want to describe an action that is happing right now

we want to describe an action that will be happening in the future
we want to describe an activity or process that started in the past and is still going on

Examples:

We are reading an interesting story right now.

My wife is flying to Madrid tomorrow.
My wife would be flying to Madrid tomorrow if she had a holiday.
Our partners have been working with us for 10 years now.

A. Present progressive = am + (base form + -ing) : I am working. OR is + (base form + -ing) :

She is eating. OR are + (base form + -ing) : We are studying.

2. Two past activities in progress at the same time.

While I was answering the phone, my wife was cooking dinner.

C. Future progressive = will be + (base form + -ing): I will be working. He will be eating.

Tomorrow Sam will be studying for the test on Unit 1.

D. Present perfect progressive = have + (base form + -ing): I have been working. OR has +
(base form + -ing): She has been eating.

1. This tense emphasizes the duration of an activity that began in the past and continues
into the present. It often uses time words or phrases. It may be used to refer to continuing
activity that is recent.

He has been painting houses all summer.

I’ve been studying English for 2 years.

2. It may be used to refer to continuing activity that is recent.

He has been going to school at CEC.

E. Past perfect progressive = had + (base form + -ing) : I had been working. He had been
eating.

When the teacher arrived, I had been waiting almost 10 minutes.

He was out of breath because he had been running to catch the bus.

F. Future perfect progressive = will have + (base form + -ing): I will have been working.

1. This tense emphasizes the duration of a continuing activity in the future that ends
before another activity or time in the future.

Activity 1 What Have You Done?

The suggestions below are principles for consumers who want to

help their environment. With a partner, read the list and share what
you have done already and what are you doing to protect the
environment.

Ten Basic Green Consumer Principles

1.Stop using products with lots of wrapping. Choose products with

the least wasteful packaging.

Example: I have stopped using products with lots of wrapping. I am

now choosing products with the least wasteful packaging.

2. Decide to buy one large box of food. Do not buy many small, individually wrapped boxes.
3. Change to products that come in reusable containers. Do not throw away so many
containers.

4. Start to buy juice concentrates and add water. Do not buy so many cans or bottles of soda pop.

5. Get your own bag to carry your lunch. Do not use a new bag every time.

6. Decide to buy good quality products that last. If something breaks, repair it instead of
replacing it.

7. Decide to use a lunchbox to carry your lunch. Do not carry your lunch in a paper bag.

8. Change to rechargeable batteries for your radio. Do not throw away old used batteries.

9. Commit to recycling glass, aluminum, and paper. Sell used containers to recycling companies.

10. Decide to buy products made of recycled material. Avoid products that cannot be recycled.

Activity 2: Taking A Part

If current practices continue in the harvest of the rain forests, most

of the world’s rain forests will disappear early in the 21st century. Some
scientists say that there are no safe methods for cutting timber. Others
say that if loggers follow the practices below, the forests will survive.

Take the part of a business executive in a forestry that has been

trying to follow sustainable forest management for ten years. Write a
report to tell what your company has been doing to protect the forest
over the long term.

1. Do not clear areas of land to put in plantations.

Example: We have not been clearing the rain forest land to put in plantations.

2. Cut trees selectively. Take only mature trees and maintain a multi-age forest.

3. Remove trees with a cable from above. Do not drag them through the forest.

4. Do not disturb the fragile soil. Do not scrape it off or compact it.

5. When you remove trees, plant new ones.

6. Give long-term rights to logging companies to encourage them to protect forests for future
use.
7. Provide jobs for the landless poor people so they do not move into forests and begin an
unsustainable form of shifting agriculture.

8. Create markets for rain forest resources such as rubber, fruits, honey and medicines.

9. Set aside some of the primary forest are as a protected national park.

Activity 3: What Can Brian Do?

Brian’s sister, Agnes, is getting married on Saturday

morning and he wants to be helpful. He has made a list of jobs that
he wants to do. His mother is also keeping a list of jobs that other
people have promised to do.

Create a role play with five members. Each member takes

one part as Brian, mother, Agnes/Bill, Ralph, or Uncle John. When
Brian volunteers to help, check the list and tell him if you are
going to do the job. If nobody else is going to, then mother tells
Brian that he can. Use verbs in progressive forms in your lines.

Example:

Brian: I will be picking up the flowers.

Uncle John: No, I am going to pick up the flowers.

Brian: I will be bringing the guest book.

Mother: Let’s see… nobody is going to bring the guest book. Fine, Brian. That’s a good job for
you.
