An experiment full of color

The famous Skittles are colorful candies with sugar coated. For many they are simply
delicious, but for others, they are the perfect material for a good experiment

Materials:
 One plate (preferably white)
 Sugar coated candy (Skittles)
 Various liquid solutions (water, coke, vinegar)

Process:
Arrange the candies on the edge of the plate. You can order them by creating the
colors of the rainbow, different patterns or according to the order you prefer.
Then, pour water in the center of the dish until the candies are half covered.
If they move, put them in place quickly. Wait a few seconds and watch carefully what
happens

Discussion
Did you notice what happened to the colors of the candies? These began to melt until
you reach the center of the plate creating a rainbow of colors. This happens because
the candies in this experiment are covered with a layer of sugar and dyes. When you
pour water on them, the dye and sugar dissolve and spread through the water, this
process is known as solubility.

Question
Main Question: Which liquid will dissolve the color coating on Skittles candy the
fastest?
Additional Questions: Do different colors of candy dissolve at different rates?
The younger kids should probably focus on only one of the questions. Older
students can try both questions and do more replicates and more careful
examination of the results.

Hypothesis
Write down your prediction about which of the liquids you are going to use will
dissolve the color coating the quickest and your reasoning.
If you are also going to examine whether different colors dissolve at different
rates, you can make your guess about that too. You should put your guesses in
order from fastest to slowest. You can use a chart like the one below.
