Scope 11 This specification? covers alloy and stainless steel bolt~ ing material for pressure vessels, valves, flanges, and fittings forhigh-temperature service. The term bolting material as used inthis specification covers bars, bolts, serews, studs, stad bots, ‘nd wire, Bars and wire shall be hot-wrought. The material ray be further processed by centerless grinding or by cold drawing. Austenitic stainless steel may be carbide solution treated or carbide solution treated and strain-hardened, When strain hardened austenitic ste! is ordered, the purchaser should take special care {0 ensure that Appendix X1 is thoroughly understood. 1.2 Several grades are covered, including ferritic steels and ansienitic stainless steels designated B 5, B 8, and so forth. Selection will depend upon design, service conditions, me- chanical properties, and high-temperature characteristics. Nore 1—The committee formulating this specification has included fiteenstel types that have been rater extensively used for the present fupose. Other compositions will be considered for inclusion by the Emmitt from time to time as the need becomes apparent. ‘Nove. 2_-For grades of alloystel bolting material suitable for use at the lower range of high-temperature applications, reference should be ide to Specification A 384 Nore 3--For grades of alloy-stel bolting material suitable for use in low-temperature applications, reference should be made 10 Specification ABDOVA 320M, 13 Nuts for use with this bolting material are covered in Section 14. 1.4 Supplementary Requirements $1 through S10 are pro- vided for use when additional tests or inspection are desired. ‘These shall apply only when specified in the purchase order. 15 This specification is expressed in both inch-pound units and’ in SI units. Manufacture (Process) 4.1 The steet shall be produced by ahy of the following Processes: open-hearth, basic-oxygen, electric-furnace, ot vacuum-induction melting (VIM). The primary melting method may incorporate separate degassing ot refining. The molten steel may be vacuun-treated prior to or during pouring of the ingot or strand casting. The basic-oxygen process shall be limited to steels containing not over 6 % chromium 42 Quality—To ensure soundness, ferrtic steel bars and wire shall be tested in accordance with Method E 381, or other suitable method as agreed upon between the purchaser and the producer. When bar or wire is supplied, the bar or wire ‘producer shall perform the test, When fasteners are supplied, either the bar or wire producer of the fastener producer, a3 ‘agreed upon between them, shall perform the test. Quality control procedures shall be suificient to demonstrate that the testing was performed and that the results were acceptable. A bar lot consisting of one heat or 10 000 Ihs, whichever i smaller, shall be represented by a minimum of one mactoetch. Visual ‘examination of transverse sections shall. show no imperfections worse than the macrographs of Method E381 S4-R4-C4 or equivalent as agreed upon. Distinct zones of solidification shall not be present. 5. Discard S.1_A sufficient discard shall be made to secure freedom from injurious piping and undue segregation. q 6. Heat Treatment 6.1 Ferrtic steels shall be properly heat treated as best suits the high-temperature characteristics of each grade. Immedi- ately after rolling or forging, the bolting material shall be allowed to cool to a temperature below the cooling transfor ‘mation range. The materials which are to be furnished in the liguid-quenched condition shall then be uniformly reheated 10 the proper temperature to refine the grain (a group thus reheated being known as a quenching charge) and quenched in a liquid medium under substantially uniform conditions for each quenching charge. Use of water quenching is prohibited for any feritic grade when heat treatment is part ofthe fastener manufacturing process. This prohibition does not apply to heat treated bar or to fasteners machined therefrom, Material Grade B16 shall be heated to a temperature range from 1700 10 1750°F [925 to 954°C] and oil quenched. The materials that are to be fumished in the normalized or air-quenched condition shall be reheated to the proper temperature to refine the grain and cooled uniformly in air to a temperature below the transformation temperature range. The material, whether liguid-quenched or normalized, shall then be uniformly re- heated for tempering. The minimum tempering temperature shall be as specified in Table 2 and Table 3. sco esatnar: Se a 1939/0 193M ‘TABLE 1 Chemical Requirements (Composition, percent)* Fane Steoe a eS ‘esergn i Crem _____Nsttypea0_____. ange Produc Variation, Range redo Veration| ‘Over or Uncer® ver or Under Gaon ome 001 under 095 max ‘01 ever Hanganese, max 1.00 2.03 over 100 0.03 ever Presper, max 080 0.008 over 2.080 0.008 over far, max 0.000 0.005 over a2 9005 over 4.00 max 005 over 1.00 mex 1.05 over 4080 a0 5495 015 40085 05 Fente Stools oem on Crome Moybaenun™ ‘Grrorivr Matpodenur vanes Prodi arson, Preduat Variation, — ver or Under Page ver or Unaer rr one ‘36047 08 65.10 004 45070 203, ‘0035 0.008 over 0.005, 0.008 over 2.000 0005 over O04 0.008 over 015035 og o16038 owe 975120 005 000.15 0s 015025 owe 50085 0.08 025035 0.08 01s Tastee Sole Gasess 1, 1A,10. and 2 Be, aA ‘BEC, BECA ‘BEM, BEMA, 2, BENS EP, BPA Ts Type 308 TiSt Type 247 TNS Type 316 "NS Type 305 wih eatcted Proail Vali, Prodi Vation. (Nonmandatory Information) X1, STRAIN HARDENING OF AUSTENITIC STEELS of cross-section reduction, die angle, and bar size. In large Giameter bars, for example, plastic deformation will occur principally in the outer regions ofthe bar so thatthe increased Strength and hardness duc to strain hardening is achieved predominantly near the surface of the bat, That is the smaller the bar, the greater the penetration of strain hardening, X12 Thus, the mechanical properties of given strain hardened fastener are dependent not just on the alloy, but also Gar ‘onthe size of bar from which itis machined. The minimum bar size that can be used, however, is established by the configu- ration of the fastener so that the configuration can affect the sirength of the fastener.
