The Science of Summer

Tis the time of year when most people are waiting for. No more classes. Late
night activities. Fun-filled happenings. Beaches. Tanning. Yes. It is Summer. But do
you know some places in the world experience six months of summer and six months
of darkness. This is because of rotation and revolution of our planet. So buckle up
as we explore how this season occurs.
Our planet rotates on its axis. Imagine a top (trumpo). The planet is the upper
wooden part and the nail below is the axis. This is how our planet moves. Because
of this, we experience day and night. Also, our planet revolves around a very large
star called the sun. This is the source of energy and heat of all the planets in Solar
system, including Earth. A complete revolution takes 365 and ¼ days or one year.
However, there are many facts that we should take into account. For example, our
planet is not round. Its shape is oblate spheroid. This means that the Earth bulges at
the center or equator part and flat at the two poles. Another is that the planet is tilted
by 23 degrees. Our country, Philippines, is located near the equator part which makes
it a tropical country. It receives sunlight all throughout the year because of its
location. And for the places near the poles, they experience six months of summer
and six months of winter because they don’t receive sunlight not equal to what our
country gets. This is why we don’t experience winter and snow. But even if we don’t
have it, Philippines is blessed with an abundant flora and fauna due to its location.
Our forest is classified as tropical rainforest with many perennial trees, diverse
species of birds, animals, insects and our marine biodiversity.
God is amazing for He gives us this season, this planet and this universe.
