Conductor Sizing Calculation

As per IEEE 80-2000, equation 40,

1
A=

where,
√[ T CAP . 10−4
t c α r ρr ][ln
( K o +T m )
( K o +T a ) ]
A = conductor cross section in sq. mm.

I = fault current considered for conductor = 25 kA

selection

tc = time of current flow = 3 sec

αr = thermal coefficient of resistivity of material

at reference temperature = 0.00393

ρr = resistivity of the conductor = 1.72 µOhm-cm

TCAP = Thermal capacity factor = 3.42 J/(cm3 ºC)

Tm = maximum allowable temperature = 1085 ºC

Ta = ambient temperature = 40 ºC

Tr = reference temperature = 20 ºC

Ko = 1 / α0 or (1 / αr) - Tr = 234 ºC

The area of cross section required for grounding conductor = 154 mm2

Proposed size for earthing conductor (50 x 5 Cu. Tape) = 250 mm2

SINCE THE PROPOSED SIZE OF THE CONDUCTOR IS GREATER THAN

THAT OF THE REQUIRED SIZE, THE PROPOSED DESIGN IS SAFE
