EE-418: Power Transmission, Distribution and Utilization

Experiment 1

INTRODUCTION TO SIMPOWER
SYSTEMS AND STUDY OF POWER
FACTOR ON SINGLE PHASE NETWORK
1.1 Objectives
The objectives of this lab are:
 To find impedance angle manually as well as with help of software.

 To understand the importance of power angle.

 To decide reactive power demand to improve power angle.

1.2 Background
MATLAB is a good tool to study the power systems as it has many modules related to it.
In today’s lab, the focus would be to explore the SIMPOWERSYSTEMS library and to
develop a simple single phase circuit to study the impact of power factor on the output
voltage and current.

Consider a single phase voltage source supplying power to a load.

( )= cos( + )
( )= cos( + )

Then the instantaneous power supplied to the load will be given as

( )= ( ) ( )= cos( + ) cos( + )
After applying trigonometric identities, we get the following relation.
( ) = | || | cos [1 + cos 2( + )] + | || | sin [sin 2( + )]
Where
| |= ,| | = , = −
√2 √2

The equivalent circuit in MATLAB will look like

1.3 Steps
 Open new model in Simulink
 Open SIMPOWERSYSTEMS library from SIMULINK browser
 Simcap -> SimPowerSystmes -> Specialized Technology -> Fundamental Blocks

 Add powergui to your model.

 Open Electrical Sources and voltage sources and add AC Voltage Source to your
model.

 Open Elements and add Series RLC load and Ground to your model.

 Open Measurements and add Current and Voltage measurement to your model.

 Now go to library Simulink -> Commonly Used Blocks.

 Add Product block and Scope to your model.
 Now connect the circuit as shown pervious page.
 Set RLC load as shown in figure below.

 Set the AC voltage source according to figure given below.

 In scope, go to settings -> general and change number of axes to 3.

 Go to history and uncheck “ Limit data to last:”
 Run the simulation for one second.

 Double click powergui and go to “toos -> steady state” and observe the value of
current and voltage.
 Observe the shape of current, voltage and power from scope.

1.4 Tasks
 Find out the impedance angle manually and from powergui.
 Find out real and reactive load values from the voltages and currents obtained in
powergui.
 Change the load such that the current angle becomes “-50 degrees. (Manually
find out first).
 Make the power angle 0.8 lagging and observe the output power. Make some
comments on it.
 Find out the maximum power angle for which the shape of output power is not
distorted.
Remember to take snapshots for your report.

1.5 Lab Report
