TOTAL 1456

The total approximation for the occupancy of the building has 1,456 people.
The assumption made, is that all the zoned areas are being occupied by the number
indicated at the table.
Location and Size of blind spaces

The blind spaces in the building are located at the Second floor highlighted with red
in figure 1. These spaces have been considered because of the size of the area that
has less space.
TEMPERATURE RATING OF SPRINKLER HEADS

Product Number GL5661
Size: 1/2" NPT
Upright, Brass
Sprinkler K-factor: 5.6 (80.7)
Temperature Rating: 135° up to 360° (68°C)

All the sprinklers in the system are the same; therefore the sprinkler heads
have the same temperature ratings of 155°F (68°C) This has low-profile yet durable
design, utilizing a frangible 5mm glass ampule as the thermosensitive element. This actuating
assembly is hermetically sealed, containing a precise amount of fluid. When heat is absorbed,
this fluid expands, shattering the glass at the prescribed temperature and discharging the water
in an approved pattern depending upon deflector style.

HYDRAULIC CALCULATIONS
GIVEN:
Density: 0.1 gpm/ft2 or 4.07 L/min/m2
Sprinkler Coverage: 11.56 m2
Sprinkler K-factor: 80.7 (Metric)
Minimum Flow:
𝑄 = 𝐷𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦 × 𝑆𝑝𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑘𝑙𝑒𝑟 𝐶𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑔𝑒
𝐿
𝑄 = 4.07 /𝑚2 × 11.56 𝑚2
𝑚𝑖𝑛
𝑄 = 47.05 𝐿/𝑚𝑖𝑛

Minimum Pressure:
𝑃 = 𝑄2 ÷ 𝐾 2
𝑃 = (47.05)2 ÷ (80.7)2
𝑃 = 0.34 𝑏𝑎𝑟 = 4.9 𝑝𝑠𝑖

Since NFPA recommends that the remotest sprinkler should operate at P ≥ 7 psi.
And P calculated is 4.9 psi; therefore, the remotest sprinkler should be adjusted to 7
psi.

Use P minimum = 7 psi (0.5 bar)

Adjusted Minimum Flow:

𝑄 = 𝐾 × √𝑃
𝑄 = (80.7) × √0.5
𝑄 = 57.06 𝐿/𝑚𝑖𝑛

Hazen-Williams Equation:
6.06 𝑥 105 𝑥 (𝑄)1.85
𝐹𝑝 =

Pipe Friction Loss:
𝑃𝑓 = 𝐹𝑝 × 𝐿

57.05 𝐿/𝑚𝑖𝑛 √. 5156 𝑏𝑎𝑟
𝑄𝑛𝑒𝑤 = 76.1 𝐿/𝑚𝑖𝑛
𝑄𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 = 76.1 𝐿/ min + 117.856 𝐿/𝑚𝑖𝑛
𝑄𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 = 194 𝐿/𝑚𝑖𝑛
Pressure Loss due to Elevation = .098 𝑏𝑎𝑟/𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑝𝑖𝑝𝑒 𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ

Hose Allowance

Since NFPA states that a total water allowance of 50gpm (190 L/min) for a
single hose connection installation shall be added to the sprinkler requirements.
Therefore:

𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑓𝑙𝑜𝑤 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑑 = 𝐹𝑙𝑜𝑤 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑐𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 + 𝐻𝑜𝑠𝑒 𝐴𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒

Total Calculated Pressure Loss from remote to pump: 2.6 bar

Total Calculated Flow rate of water from remote to pump: 1160.87 L/min
