Call for Papers

Intellectual capital is a relatively recent research focus that has amassed interest in parallel with
the development of the knowledge economy. Currently, there is a relatively common
understanding of the importance of intellectual capital as a source of national competitiveness.
National competitiveness is a major interest nowadays not only for our academics, but also
among policy makers, managers and international institutions. Countries want to find ways to
strengthen their competitiveness. According to the World Economic Forum definition, national
competitiveness refers to all the institutions, policies and factors that determine a country's
level of productivity. The level of productivity therefore determines the country's level of
prosperity and the return on domestic investment. So going by this definition, intellectual
capital can be an important source and indicator of competitiveness at country and company

h
level.

At the country level, the World Bank recognizes that investment in intellectual capital is a
es crucial factor for economic growth, job creation and quality of life (World Bank, 2018). In the
R
w same vein, the OECD (2011, 2013, 2016),) has highlighted the importance given by high
a
L development countries to intangible capital in OECD countries. On the other hand,
d
n developments in advanced economies have shown that production requires not only traditional
a
nt factors such as financial capital and labor but also skills, organizational structures and
e
m processes and other "intangible resources". Intangible resources therefore have significant
e
ag productivity benefits.
At the company level, the researchers highlighted the importance of the IC as a critical
n
a
organizational resource to create and achieve a sustainable competitive advantage. Studies

s,

conducted towards IC widely state that intangible resources are major sources of value creation.
o
Other statements also make intellectual capital a key element of companies' growth potential
n
o and sustainable development by providing a better competitive position. According to the
Ec
of OECD (2008), intangible capital brings other benefits to companies, including improved
w
ie customer retention, motivation, recruitment and retention of employees, and improved business
ev
R competitiveness.
al
n The objective of this issue is to explore the relationship between intellectual capital
io
at management and the sustainable competitiveness of companies, cities, regions and countries.
